Telemed abortion ban ruled unconstitutional by Iowa Supreme Court

Source: KCRG

DES MOINES — Iowa’s ban on using telemedicine to issue abortion pills is unconstitutional, The Iowa Supreme Court ruled Friday morning.

The Iowa Board of Medicine banned the practice of using a webcam and remote to administer the abortion-inducing pills to patients in 2013.

Planned Parenthood of Iowa argued that it had used the technology to provide needed services in areas where access to medical services was an issue. The group sued the board, arguing the ban places an undue burden on women wanting an abortion by requiring a doctor’s physical presence for the procedure.

seriously shocked. I thought sure that I heard this was a slam dunk that it would be ruled constitutional.

So much for Vandyplates and his war on the Iowa Supreme Court.

Allow me to say the following to the Vander Plants crowd;

All that work the Vander Plants crowd put into getting judges removed from the Supreme Court after they ruled in favor of gay marriage didn't work out to well for them.

I can tell you from working in the pharma industry that "telemed" is getting huge and growing like a mushroom cloud. Personally, it scares me as I just think the doctors need to see AND be able to touch a person to do their job properly but I am on the losing side on this one.

It's another one of those follow the money deals. The doctors love it since they get paid for every person they see via a cell phone camera. They don't need to even have a clinic or an examination room. The pharma companies love it cause it has meant a huge increase in the number of prescriptions. The health insurance companies love it because it saves them money since it can be done less expensively than an in-person visit. The bulk of these are done in situations where the doctor has never even met the patient and the doctor is making a first time diagnosis via camera.

With the article above I don't see how the Supreme Court could have ruled any differently since telemed is being used in hundreds of thousands of cases for every type of patient problem, many far more complex than an abortion inducing drug that is sold over the counter in many European countries.
