Tarzan's chimp Cheetah dies aged 80

Cheetah the chimpanzee from the Tarzan movies of the 1930s has died at the age of 80.
The Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbour, Florida, announced on its website that Cheetah died on December 24 of kidney failure.
Sanctuary outreach director Debbie Cobb told The Tampa Tribune that Cheetah was outgoing, loved finger painting and liked to see people laugh. She said he seemed to be tuned into human feelings.
Cheetah was the comic relief in the Tarzan series starring American Olympic gold medal swimmer Johnny Weissmuller.
Ms Cobb said Cheetah came to the sanctuary from Weissmuller's estate sometime around 1960.
Ms Cobb said Cheetah was not a troublemaker. Still, sanctuary volunteer Ron Priest said when the chimp did not like what was going on, he would throw faeces.

The Cheeta role
The character of Cheeta was a composite role created through the use of numerous animal actors. According to journalist R. D. Rosen, "In each Tarzan movie, the Cheeta role [was] played by more than one chimp, depending on what talents the scene called for."[1] Known and alleged performers of the role include:

(28,350 posts)Cheeta was a male chimpanzee born about 1960, formerly owned by Tony Gentry and was residing at the C.H.E.E.T.A. Primate Sanctuary (Creative Habitats and Enrichment for Endangered and Threatened Apes) in Palm Springs, California. Gentry claimed at various times that this chimpanzee was born in 1932 or later in the 1930s and succeeded Jiggs as the film Cheeta, portraying the character in most of the Johnny Weismuller and Lex Barker Tarzan films. He was alleged to have appeared in non-Tarzan films in other chimp roles as well, and based on the 1932 birthdate alleged by Gentry became celebrated as oldest living chimpanzee on reaching the supposed age of 64 in 1996 (chimpanzees typically live to be 40-45 in the wild). All of these claims were debunked in 2008 by journalist R. D. Rosen in an article that settled the animal's true age and established that he had not appeared in any movies, let alone in the role of Cheeta.[11] Cheeta died on December 24, 2011 of kidney failure at the age of 51.[12]
So maybe I need more sleep but if the date of death is the same doesnt that make the chimp only 51 and not 80?

It is also difficult to determine which movies, if any, our Cheeta may have been in. As a result of this discovery, we updated our website as soon as we could, by late January 2008, to reflect the information putting Cheeta's life history in doubt."

(69,059 posts)Monkey business: Is Tarzan's chimp Cheeta a cheater?
By David Leafe

<snip>
Recent investigations suggest Cheeta cannot be as old as claimed and certainly isn't the chimp who appeared in the early Tarzan films. If this is true, the world's favourite animal film star is an impostor.
The story of Cheeta's life which has been accepted until now relies heavily on the accounts given by his first owner, Hollywood animal trainer Tony Gentry. He claimed to have acquired him as a baby chimpanzee during a visit to Liberia in West Africa in 1932, hiding him under his jacket and smuggling him aboard a Pan Am flight back to America.
<snip>
First there was Tony Gentry's claim about bringing Cheeta back to America on that Pan Am flight in 1932. Rosen's research showed that there were no transatlantic airline services until 1939.
Next was the suggestion that Cheeta had played Chee-Chee in Doctor Dolittle. Although this had been supported by numerous newspaper stories since, Rosen watched a DVD of the movie and was puzzled to see that Chee-Chee was portrayed by a juvenile chimpanzee who was clearly no older than eight.
Since the film was made in 1966, by which time Cheeta would have been at least 34 by Tony Gentry's own account, this could not be the same chimp that starred with Johnny Weissmuller in the Tarzan epics.

(23,476 posts)for almost killing and actually ripping the face off of a woman a few years ago, (she recently underwent a face transplant). After that became front page news for awhile and she was on Oprah I've been kind of afraid of Chimpanzees. I wonder what was the extenuating circumstance in that case or if all chimpanzees can be violent. This little guy seems so cute.
I just read up and I think Travis, the chimp that attacked the woman was 200 pounds. That seems much bigger than this little guy.

RIP Cheetah. You know, when you think of it, just think of the shit Cheetah saw the last 80 years. And he was the one to give the last command in the jungle. Certainly should own Man of the Year 2011.
