Illinois governor: Shutdown worth pain if it brings change

Source: Telegraph Herald / Associated Press

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Gov. Bruce Rauner says a partial state government shutdown is worth the pain if it brings fundamental change to business and politics in Illinois.

The Republican told reporters this morning that "change is hard ... but we need to have change." Rauner addressed workers at the Illinois Emergency Management Agency one day before the state begins a new fiscal year without a budget agreement.

Rauner insists on changes he says will make it cheaper to do business and to free politics from corruption before agreeing with the Democratic-controlled legislature. Democrats say it's more important to have a budget in place so state services aren't interrupted.

In other words Rauner's going to do the political equivalent of spinning on his back in the Wally World parking lot.

A (somewhat) teabagger state legislature and a Democratic governor with a budget that expires at midnight. Wolf has the option to veto the whole thing (which would mean shutdown) or do a line-item (which would keep services going). Last I saw, he hadn't decided yet.

at the worst possible time. We wouldn't be in this mess if he hadn't done this. He's treating Ill like one of his venture capitalist businesses that eventually went bankrupt

The tax expired Jan. 1. Republican governor did not take over until Jan. 12. Democrats had all last year to extend the tax. They declined to do it.

and the governorship why would they need a veto-proof majority? Gov. Quinn said he wanted it extended. Where was the veto going to come from? The sky? Democrats 71, Republicans 47, not that it has any relevance to the issue. Speaker Madigan did not want it extended for election reasons.

You are trying to throw a red herring into the conversation. How unusual for you....

But they'll change their tune the first time they fail to raise the U.S. debt ceiling and find out what the economic consequences are. In the real world.

I think for many Republicans they don't care about the economic consequences to us or the world. They think this country is theirs to rule by divine right and will hurt anyone or anything to achieve that goals.

- "I'll ban abortion!"
- "I'll stop the gays from getting married!"

It looks like they have the 60% threshold in both chambers to be able to override his vetoes.

I think Ruiner is looking at his neighbor Governors to the east (Indiana) and north (Wisconsin) and to a lesser extent the one in the west (Iowa) and feels that he has to be a big time GOP badass so he doesn't get primaried.
