At least 35 people have been killed in ongoing attacks on several military checkpoints and police stations in Egypt's northern Sinai, security sources and witnesses have told Al Jazeera.
About 70 fighters, reportedly belonging to an ISIL-affiliated group, simultaneously attacked several targets in the area on Wednesday, the sources said, adding that at least 22 of the fighters were killed and three of their vehicles were destroyed.
Egypt's air force deployed fighter jets to the region to assist the army in the ongoing battle, Al Jazeera learned.
The mortuary in El-Arish received at least 35 bodies, medical sources told Al Jazeera. Egyptian security sources said that at least 11 soldiers were among the dead. Local media reports suggested the death toll of the attacks could be much higher.

(14,779 posts)Egypt has been fighting an insurgency in Sinai since before the fall of Mubarak (Wikipedia says it started AFTER the start of the Egypt Revolution then ignores the fact that Mubarak did not fall from power till late in the Revolution). Thus this insurgency started before ISIS was ever founded. Thus it is highly unlikely this is an ISIS operation, my money would be on the existing insurgency (which calmed down under Morsi, but has since increased in intensity).
The Insurgents have connections with the Moslem Brotherhood and Hamas but NOT Saudi Arabia, al Queda and ISIS. The Egyptian press is controlled by the existing Government and they know ISIS is the hot name in the west so it was used.

The sources said authorities had received information the group was planning to carry out an attack. Among those dead was Nasser al-Hafi, a prominent lawyer for the Muslim Brotherhood and a former lawmaker.

(27 posts)It won't be tomorrow. It won't be a month from now. It probably won't be a year from now. But eventually Sisi is going to get what's coming to him from within. If people had grievances with Mubarak enough to kick him out, you can bet it will happen to Sisi. He's quickly emerging as one of the worst dictators in the region.

(3,746 posts)The Muslim Brotherhood says its leaders killed in a Cairo apartment were murdered in "in cold blood," calling for a rebellion against President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who it calls a "butcher."
"Come out in rebellion and in defense of your country, yourselves and your children," it said in a statement issued in English Wednesday. "Destroy the citadels of his oppression and tyranny and reclaim Egypt once more."
It called the killings "a turning point that will have its own repercussions... el-Sissi is initiating a new phase during which it will not be possible to control the anger of the oppressed sectors who will not accept to be killed in their own houses and in the middle of their families."
It says the men were from a Brotherhood committee that supports the families of the group's detainees and "martyrs," and were "rounded up inside the house and then were murdered in cold blood without any investigations or indictments."
