Jimmy Carter Says Jesus Would Approve Of Gay Marriage

Source: Huffington Post

Faith is important to former President Jimmy Carter, and he writes about it extensively in his new memoir A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety. But his religious beliefs don't keep him from supporting every American's right to marry the person they love.

HuffPost Live's Marc Lamont Hill asked Carter on Tuesday whether he believes Jesus would approve of gay marriage, and Carter said he does.

"I believe Jesus would. I don't have any verse in scripture. ... I believe Jesus would approve gay marriage, but that's just my own personal belief. I think Jesus would encourage any love affair if it was honest and sincere and was not damaging to anyone else, and I don't see that gay marriage damages anyone else," he said.

There is no reason to suppose that Jesus rejected any part of the Mosaic law.

Or do you really believe he is God?

In the case of this subject matter it is of note that he specifically rejected Moses in regard to divorce, which Jesus frowned heavily upon. He said Moses permitted divorce because people are so messed up. 'Because of the hardness of your hearts' is the text. He says it was not always allowed and that he called it adultery.
A literary character is made up of their words and the actions ascribed to them. There never was a 'real King Lear' but there are still the things that King Lear says and does and things he does not, his being fictional does not mean he is not defined as a character by the things he says and does in the literary work.

Anyone who has read and pondered the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) knows that Jesus was not the least bit interested in our sex lives. Jesus cared about hearts and souls -- how humble, kind, loving, and good we are. He would never castigate two people of the same sex who want to enter into a lifelong caring, loving, committed relationship. He would certainly not snoop into their bedroom.

It's too bad so many of his supposed followers are obsessed with sex. It's one of the things that separate them from him. Unfortunately, this unhealthy obsession also manages to taint the entire religion.

Because if there's anything we know about Jesus it's that he was:

#1) Nice.
#2) 100% liberal Democrat (see #1).

getting pissed at the tax collectors, healing people on the sabbath, hanging out with less than stellar individuals. he was a rebel. too bad so many of his followers don.t truly follow his word and teachings.

i believeJesus would very much aligned with modern progressive ideology.

I made years ago in neglecting to ask him for his autograph when I saw him eating breakfast one day near my work. I suppose it would have been rude of me to interrupt, and that's why I went on about my day. But I'll never forget it.

... Carter is probably the most moral man to occupy the Oval Office.

Carter and I are on the same page. We don't believe that God is hung up on sex. We believe that God recognizes "love" as "love."

And if any person on this planet is willing to accept that there is a God, I believe this image of God is as good as it gets.

and that my 2nd vote wasn't enough to keep him in the White House. I admire him as a statesman and a Christian. I'm glad he's on board with gay marriage.

There's this story in the Bible about how a Roman centurion is distressed because his "slave" is ill, and he wants Jesus to heal this man. Even as a child, I wondered what the big deal was, because I'd never heard of someone caring that much about a slave. Later in my life, someone told me that although there was no exact word, "boyfriend" might be a better translation of the term. The light dawned for me.

Jesus was willing to go to their house, but the Roman wouldn't allow it, because he understood the chain of command. Jesus praised him for his faith, and today many Christian liturgies use the soldier's words: "Lord, I am not worthy that you should come under my roof. Speak but the word, and my [soul] shall be healed."

So if Jesus didn't care, I don't think I should either.
