Kishwaukee College adjunct faculty forms union

MALTA More than 100 part-time Kishwaukee College teachers has formed a union and contract negotiations should begin this fall.
On Monday, the Illinois Labor Relations Board certified union pledge cards signed and submitted by most of the community college's faculty last month.
Through this new union, part-time faculty at Kish will join the Illinois Federation of Teachers just as the college's other full-time faculty union.
"If you are a student enrolled at Kishwaukee College, it is likely many of your teachers are adjuncts," federation spokesman Kenzo Shibata said in an email. "Most departments do not allow adjunct faculty to serve on committees that determine critical actions including curriculum, textbooks and student assessment. A union will give them (a) voice in advocating for the students they serve."

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
