Armed man fires accidental shot near recruit center
Source: Lancaster Eagle-Gazette
An armed volunteer guarding the U.S. Army Recruiting Center accidentally fired a shot just after noon, according to Lancaster police.
Christopher Reed, 28, of Lancaster, is one of the volunteers who have been guarding the Lancaster recruiting site following the shooting and killing of five service members at an unguarded recruiting center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, last week.
The volunteers were a group of citizens who are guarding recruiting centers across the country. Their goal is to not stop guarding the recruiting centers until members of the military at recruiting centers were able to arm themselves for protection.
According to a Lancaster police report, the shooting occurred between 11:30 a.m. and 12:01 p.m. outside the recruiting office, 1534 River Valley Circle.

All four of these conditions require a deliberate human action. There's no such thing as an accident.

(7,981 posts)The argument that all military service members should be armed with guns to protect themselves proffered by GOP presidential candidates Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, and Donald Trump in the wake of the shooting deaths of four Marines and a sailor last week in Chattanooga, Tennessee is so basic that theres not much argument to it at all. Railing against gun-free zones last Friday, Trump summed the case up in this way: This sick guy had guns and shot them down. These are decorated people. These are people who could have handled guns very easily. They would have had a good chance if they had a gun. In making their cases, the presidential hopefuls echoed a Connecticut car repairman whose shop is near a military recruiting office, who told the Associated Press that arming its occupants made perfect sense to him. Most of them are trained infantrymen, the repairman asserted. That definitely would make it a lot more safe. Theyre military, they know how to use guns, how could we not have every one of them be armed all the time, just in case?
The argument is intuitive enough for a political sound bite and, like many sound bites, does not hold up well under fact-checking. It reflects a basic misconception about the average military members proficiency with guns, and it flat-out misses the reality that armed-forces installations are not gun-free zones by any stretch of the imagination. Indeed, the military has fairly liberal guidelines empowering its commanders to arm members to defend themselves. Its just that those guidelines prioritize personal safety and the high likelihood of gun mishaps over statistically rare tragedies like the Chattanooga shooting.

"None was present when the rifle discharged."
The lone sentry was willing to hand over his weapon just because someone wanted to see it.
A fine example of how the militia 'protects' our recruiters.

(36,792 posts)Reed said he is not a military veteran. He described himself as an active gun enthusiast who makes a living working side jobs.
He downplayed what happened. It is what it is, he said. Nobody got hurt.
He sounds like a real asset to his community. Hopefully the judge will see otherwise and throw the book at him this time.

Terry Jackson, a member of Operation Hero Guard, stands guard outside a U.S. military recruiting station in Cleburne, Texas, Tuesday, July 21, 2015.
WASHINGTON The Army has warned its recruiters to treat the gun-toting civilians gathering at centers across the country in the wake of the Chattanooga, Tenn., shooting as a security threat.
Soldiers should avoid anyone standing outside the recruiting centers attempting to offer protection and report them to local law enforcement and the command if they feel threatened, according to a U.S. Army Recruiting Command policy letter issued Monday.
Armed citizens some associated with activist groups and militias were standing vigil outside recruiting centers in Wisconsin, Georgia, Tennessee, Idaho and elsewhere this week, saying they want to provide protection to servicemembers barred from carrying firearms on duty. Four Marines and a sailor were killed by Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez, a 24-year-old Kuwait-born resident of Tennessee, during an attack Thursday on a strip mall recruiting center and a Navy facility that is being investigated as an act of terrorism.
Abdulazeez fired into the front of the recruiting station but there were no casualties. The five servicemembers were killed during an attack on the Navy Operational Support Center. A Navy officer and a Marine reportedly fired at the gunman, although it is unclear why they were armed. It is against Defense Department policy for anyone other than military police or law enforcement to carry weapons on federal property.
Im sure the citizens mean well, but we cannot assume this in every case and we do not want to advocate this behavior, according to the Army Command Operations Center-Security Division letter, which was authenticated by the service............
