Row over 'insulting' New Zealand contraception plans

Source: BBC

Anti-poverty groups in New Zealand have strongly criticised government plans to offer free long-term contraception to women receiving welfare payments.

...

The plans are motivated by beneficiaries being "seen as people who are worth less than others", they say.

But the government says the measures are designed to get people on welfare into training or work rather than staying at home having more children.

... critics say the move is tantamount to social engineering because they say it gives the government a role in dictating women's reproductive rights.

offering contraception to people who can't afford it. Nothing wrong with that!

If they didn't offer this free health care, the same people would probably be complaining about that instead.

Well yes. Isn't that the point and isn't that what people want?

Unless I'm misreading the article, the government isn't mandating the use of contraception, it's merely making it available.

Only an idiot would WANT the government to dictate women's reproductive rights.

it's not required, it is "offered".

5. its offered to them but they are not required to accept or use it sounds like a good thing

obviously it would be better if it were offered to all people who couldn't afford it on their own instead of only the welfare families.

if you're trying to get out of poverty they absolutely are a hindrance (in a modern society, we're not talking about primitive agriculturalists who need the free labor).

It's offered, not required, and it's free. That seems like a brilliant idea to me.

This:

They argue that mass contraception measures would not only fail to reduce poverty but would also increase unwanted pregnancies because they encourage a more casual approach to sex.

smells like a republiCON to me.
