BREAKING: White House considers extradition of Cecil lion killer Walter Palmer
Source: Express
The White House is to review a public petition to extradite Walter Palmer, who killed Cecil the lion, paving the way for the American dentist to be sent back to Africa to face charges.
The petition has exceeded 100,000 signatures and US government officials said it was now up to the justice department to respond to the extradition order.
Cecil's death is currently being investigated by Zimbabwean authorities and the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS).
In a statement released on Thursday, the organisation said: "We are currently gathering facts about the issue and will assist Zimbabwe officials in whatever manner requested. At this point in time, however, multiple efforts to contact Dr Walter Palmer have been unsuccessful."

(2,335 posts)I know of two level headed, law abiding boomers, with education and assets, and local community regard who have told me they would "kill" this guy in cold blood if they had a chance and could get away with it. I believe them. There is something this horrific act has triggered in the vestigial brain. I think this guy is dead man walking and knows it. We humans have an awe of animals and the natural order that we rarely admit. This act hit that nerve.

It appears to have the usual "if the crime is a crime in both countries" requirement.
Either the executive branch or the judicial branch of the US can stop an extradition.
Thor_MN
(11,843 posts)You have cited two criteria now. That both Executive Branch and Judicial need to approve and that either can stop.

(26,366 posts)if either doesn't approve the request the extradition doesn't happen.

The whole "You're mad at about this, but not _______" bit is just as pathetic coming from the left as it is coming from the right.
Attacking people for their passion about their issue isn't going to win them to your issue.

(885 posts)though it's technically a half truth. We've wiped out the wolf population in much of the country. This has led to an explosion in the deer population (as well as some other animals). And without the wolves to keep them in check the deer can over breed to the point of mass starvation.
Now the logical fix to restore balance would be to simply reintroduce wolves and let them clean it up as they always did before we came along. However farmers will have none of that (wolves also kill livestock). Besides wolves are scary (we'll ignore the fact that wolf attacks on humans are nearly non-existant).
No, us being who we are, we came up with a much more American way to solve the problem while simultaniously getting our blood lust fill. We'll mass shoot the deer so they don't mass die to starvation.
It's actually brilliant if you think about it.
Too over the top?

(885 posts)even though I don't hunt. I'm not condemning anyone for hunting. Just pointing some facts out.
It's not nescessary to hunt. We moved from a hunter gatherer society thousands of years ago. We are fully capable of feeding everyone without hunting. That doesn't stop the drive many people have to hunt.
I think some people are just asking for honesty on hunting. People hunt because they enjoy it and they hunt because some animals we like to eat aren't suitable to being livestock. That's really all there is to it. There is no greater noble cause to hunting.
Skittles
(154,048 posts)they need to stop acting like they're doing something noble when they hunt - they hunt because they enjoy stalking and killing animals, but they never admit that

(20,375 posts)When there were billions of them, prairie dogs were the preferred prey of large carnivores. When ranchers started poisoning them by the millions, saying that their cattle were stepping in holes and breaking their legs, the large carnivores had to move on to something else, like livestock and deer. So then the ranchers solution was to kill the wolves and coyotes.
Prairie dogs also ate mesquite beans and shoots, keeping invasive species in check. Without prairie dogs, mesquite spread far and wide, taking over millions of acres of grassland that had been grazed in the past.
Bison and prairie dogs had a symbiotic relationship for thousands of years. If ranchers want to distract wolves from their livestock and improve the quality of the grasslands, they need to save the prairie dog.

(95,337 posts)Obvious for some of us the best punishment would be to let a pack of hungry lions hunt him or probably something more practical like serving time in a Zimbabwe jail, which I can't imagine is a place anyone would want to spend quality time.
But in the end there is a better way that could do a world of good for the people of Zimbabwe and maybe give Dr. Palmer DDS a bit of humility to boot.
The man is a dentist. And I'm sure a country like Zimbabwe there is probably thousands of people there who might benefit from free dental care. He can pay back his time by maybe spending 2-3 years running a free Dental clinic in Zimbabwe where he can offer his services to those people who might not be able to afford to see a dentist. Good dental hygiene and especially healthy gums can lead to a healthier life because diseased gums are one of the easiest ways for germs & bacteria to enter into the blood stream and cause health issues.
I think that would be a fitting punishment and put him to good use for the country he harmed!

US F&WS can rattle their collective sabers, but that's all they actually can do.
The only hope of Palmer being held accountable is if Mugabe offers a substantial bounty for the delivery of Palmer to Zimbabwe's authorities. Even if there were an extraditable offense, the U.S. is unlikely to extradite to Zimbabwe given Mugabe's record of human rights violation and the level of corruption rampant in that country.
