Translation
A video circulating on social networks and spread by El Nuevo Herald shows what appears to be the execution of a suspect by members of the Venezuelan police on Wednesday August 5th. According to a source familiar with the case, the police are part of the government of Aragua state.
On Thursday night, the ombudsman of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, said through his Twitter account that he spoke with the governor of Aragua Tarek El Aissami, who "stated that five suspected murderers and the young have been made to order the prosecution ".
Wow... And some chavistas here dare say that Venezuela is a prime example of progressive state.

(2,035 posts)Why the hell does every atrocity in Latin America have to be perpetrated by the CIA? It's almost like you can't accept that a leftist government can be incompetent or corrupt. It's mind-boggling.

(1,236 posts)They may not have anything to do with this, but gee, CIA involvement in murder in Central/South America...Who would have thought?
I see no real national interest for us, so there probably is nothing there. But the CIA acting outside of direction from our leadership should not surprise anyone anymore.

(39,171 posts)Central and South America is the most violent region in the world with an astronomical murder rate. Police violence is also off the scale - in Brazil alone, the police murder 3,000 people annually.

(62,269 posts)...held his hands, and executed him next to several other bodies.
My guess it was Brazil-style street justice but it got caught on camera.

(35,296 posts)I'm no lover of the Venezuelan state, to be sure, but that translation's mangled.

"Thursday night the public defender Tarek William Saab said, using his Twitter account, that he'd spoken with Aragua state governor Tareck El Aissami, who "stated that the 5 who allegedly murdered the young man had been referred to the chief prosecutor."
I'm fudging a bit on the "referred to the chief prosecutor"--it might mean a warrant's been issued already or turned over to their custody. "Ambiguity is your friend".
But it's clear that the police are presumed by the governor to be acting entirely on their own, without sanction from the central government. (The governor may have his head up his ass, but that's not obvious from what he said.)

(62,269 posts)The police in Venezuela (and Brazil and a lot of other Latin American countries with high crime rates) are just thugs. Of course, they do get shot at random just for being police, to have their guns stolen from them, so them being thugs isn't surprising.
Odds are they had "suspicions" that these street kids were gang members (malandros) and they just wanted to dispense with them privately. Unfortunately for them it was recorded. And now they're going to wind up dead in a Venezuelan prison shortly (if they can't pull off a massive bribe and get out of dodge).
Whether mayors or not are aware of this or turn a blind eye to it I can't say for sure, but surely there is talk about this sort of thing happening. But to think as if it is ordered is a mighty big stretch. The risk is too high. The fallout from this is massive enough as it is.

Two prosecutors will lead an investigation into the role of police in the violent deaths of four people in the northern state of Aragua, the Venezuelan Attorney General's Office said Friday.
"The death of the four men would have occurred during a procedure carried out on Aug. 5 by police officers in Aragua state" in the town of San Vicente, the AG office said in a statement.
For the past few hours a video lasting around 2 minutes has gone viral on social networks showing three bodies on the ground and several Aragua police officers getting out of a red SUV with a young man in custody.
Soon afterwards a blast is heard and the youth, who had been restrained by two cops, falls to the ground. Later more shots are heard and one of the policemen is seen pouring water on the detainee.
