'Batman' who visited children in hospitals killed when car hits Batmobile
Source: CNN
Lenny B. Robinson, the Good Samaritan who visited children in hospitals dressed as Batman and entered the public spotlight after police pulled him over in costume, died Sunday after a car hit his custom Batmobile on a Maryland interstate.
Medical personnel pronounced Robinson, 51, dead at the scene, Hagerstown State Police said in a statement.
His custom Lamborghini broke down while he was driving east on I-70 in the fast lane. He got out to check the engine while still in the lane, and a Toyota Camry struck his car, which in turn hit him, the statement said.
The Camry driver was not injured, the police statement said.
On top of the cost of his Batmobile and Caped Crusader suit, Robinson said, he spent tens of thousands of dollars each year on coloring books, sunglasses and other gifts for children he visited in hospitals across Washington and Maryland.

Remember this guy? He got lots of press a few years ago when a pic of cops stopping his car went viral. It's then we learned that he spends 1000s of his own money to visit kids in the hospital as Batman. This is really sad.
This is the photo that made him famous.

Route 29 Batman is killed after his Batmobile breaks down along a Md. highway
The Route 29 Batman, whose roadside encounter with Montgomery County police three years ago made him a viral sensation around the world, has died.
Lenny B. Robinson, the 51-year-old Maryland man who drove a custom-made Batmobile and dressed as the Caped Crusader to visit sick children in hospitals, was struck by a car on Interstate 70 on Sunday night near Hagerstown, Md., after the Batmobile broke down. He was coming home from a car show in West Virginia.
Robinson had just stopped at a gas station, where he met a family whose children were interested in his custom-made car, Maryland state police in Hagerstown said. Robinson gave the kids some superhero paraphernalia before leaving about the same time as his new acquaintances. When they saw him pull over, they did the same and witnessed the 10:30 p.m. accident, state police said.
Robinson was having engine trouble and stopped partially in the fast lane, according to a state police news release. He was checking the engine when the Batmobile was struck by a Toyota Camry. The Batmobile then hit him. Robinson was pronounced dead at the scene.

(3,963 posts)I mean, he took several seconds rummaging through the stuff in his car while the mantle was hiding what he was doing. Amazing the cops did not go ballistic there...
