'Female Viagra' gets FDA approval

Source: CNN

Women who have lost their sex drive now have a little pink pill to help them. On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved flibanserin, brand name Addyi, for the treatment of sexual dysfunction in premenopausal women.

A 2002 study found that up to one-third of adult women might experience hypoactive sexual desire disorder, a technical term for when women lack sexual desire or fantasy.

...snip...

Addyi is frequently referred to as "female Viagra" because it's a pill for sexual dysfunction in women. However, experts say it's a misnomer to describe it as such since it works in a distinctly different way to target the brain.

Viagra treats erectile dysfunction, a physical problem, and does not induce sexual desire. Addyi works on the central nervous system, which is why it's in the same category as an antidepressant.

why do I have the feeling this drug is going to be seriously abused by men trying to drug women without them knowing?

Am I too cynical?

difference is this drug need to be taken continuously to be effective, and even with that increased libido is effective in about 40% of the people tested. Chemically it is based on an anti-depressant, and has potential side effects.

I do not see this drug as being abused

I was thinking the same thing.

Oh, and by the way, some women just don't want to have sex. Reasons may vary from disinterest in the prospective partner, illness, stress, fatigue, inconvenience, hell, there can be any reason -- all of which are valid. Men might not accept this fact. So, yes, this will be the next date-rape drug.

I had little doubt that this would get approved. $$$$$$$

Great for big pharma, great for inevitable side effects, terrible for women.

This news made me sad, as if female sexuality could be 'fixed' with a daily pill.

Uch.

Why so much negativity? Some women will want it; some won't. No one is forced to try it. Myself, I am totally eager to give it a whirl and see what it does!

I just cant figure out how to pronounce Addyi. WTH?

Since it seems to have its limitations, what with side effects and long-term dosing, it will hopefully just be used by those who really need it.
