Rush Limbaugh: 1965 Was "A Great Year; Bullying Was Legal"
Source: mediamatters.org
LIMBAUGH: Now maybe I'm wrong, but I think most people are gonna laugh at this. It's so obvious now -- it is so pathetically transparently transparent what this is. Media ganging up on Romney -- a pro-Obama media ganging up on Romney. 1965 -- probably a stretch to say it had anything to do with the kid being presumed gay. You had long hair in 1965, you were gonna get razzed. It didn't matter.
They weren't gonna think you were in the Beatles. If you had long hair in 1965, you were gonna get made fun of. See, 1965's a great year; bullying was legal.
Limbaugh added: "Watch that be a quote that shows up at Media Matters: 'Limbaugh praising bullying while defending Romney.' "

The same guy who sold t-shirts supporting waterboarding.
The same guy who ridiculed and mocked Michael J. Fox for having a disease.
Thank gawd Rush has no kids of his own to raise to grow up to be just like him.
Limbaugh is about as effective as a fart in a tornado.

(23,147 posts)of trying to make light of bullying in modern America. Rush is out of touch and he's only appeasing the base. Attempts to do that by making light of bullying will drastically alienate all of the normal people, intelligent people, youth, and the oppressed, including all immigrants. Obama managed to create a poisoned situation that nobody on the right is prepared for. He basically pointed out that Romney has Hepatitis and is applying to work in a restaurant.

(58,361 posts)so as to make Romney's behavior seem moderate by comparison.
Rush defending the practice of bullying as acceptable behavior makes Romney's faux apology seem magnanimous to the sheeple.
In a large sense Romney is more dangerous than Rush because too many people know Limbaugh for the evil that he is, on the other hand Romney will be able to fool and/or buy more people and institutions.
Having said all that, they're two faces of the same coin, but one side is polished and the other tarnished so if you're a sheeple flip over the ugly side and gaze at the shiny.

They both go all out to be offensive and pick fights with people, and even after they get reprimanded and punished for what they say, they keep trying to press people's buttons. Cartman got his ass kicked countless times by Kyle, yet he still makes fun of him for being Jewish. And Limbaugh is still continuing on with his bigoted and misogynist comments.

(14,337 posts)Yes, it was the Beatles generation (teenagers) back then who "long" hair. Many private schools, even in NYC, had dress codes and long hair was not accepted on boys. 1965 was not the hippie era, and longer hair on men hadn't yet spread to the general population. Maybe in California the surfer "bushy, bushy blond hairdo" was in before, but generally not on the East Coast. Maybe these East Coast preppie boys didn't like the California surfer boy look?
I was still living in the Village in 65. The majority of adult gay men did not have long hair then.
Waiting For Everyman
(9,385 posts)Dying hair was only for women, to Romney, I'm guessing. It was almost never done by men up until that time, so that would've been crossing gender role lines in his mind. Some guys in my school did the bleaching too, but it was a very new thing. (I was on the East Coast btw, near D.C., but it was a very trendy school for some reason.)
Lauber's sister said at the very end of the WaPo article, that her brother kept dying his hair blond all his life until he died. That says to me that it continued to be a self-defining statement of resistance to Lauber.
