Murray, no. 4 Senate Democrat, backs Iran deal

Source: Politico

Washington Sen. Patty Murray, the fourth-ranking Senate Democrat, has officially endorsed President Barack Obama’s nuclear agreement with Iran.

Though Murray had long been expected to line up behind the agreement, her formal announcement on Tuesday brings the Obama administration closer to the 34 votes needed in the Senate to sustain any veto of the resolution of disapproval on the nuclear deal.

Murray is the 29th Senate Democrat to come out in favor of the agreement. Just two Senate Democrats have said they will oppose the deal in Congress – Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, the No. 3 Democrat; and Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey.

In a statement Tuesday, Murray said she would prefer several elements of the nuclear deal to be “stronger” but warned that if lawmakers reject the agreement, it would only push Iran closer toward developing nuclear weapons.

That's 29 confirmed yes votes, there are still some leaners out there.

Schumer and Menendez (and also, to some extent, Wasserman Schulz for being "unsure&quot are on my black list forever. OK, I admit that they were pretty much there already, even before the Iran issues came up, but now Schumer and Menendez are there permanently. (I still have some hope for Wasserman Schulz).

Dear Senator Schumer:

I just want you to know that I, and everyone I know in New York City, enthusiastically support the international peace agreement with Iran brokered by President Obama and others. We could not disagree with you more on your bizarre opposition to this agreement. I do not know whose interests you think you are protecting, but war with Iran would not be good for anyone on this planet. Once again, you seem to be captive to crazy rhetoric by a rightwing cabal in this country and in Israel. Did you not learn your lesson from Iraq? The same lunatics who are advocating war with Iran now, told us in 2003 that there was absolutely no question that Saddam Hussein was actively pursuing an atomic weapon. Even their policy of torturing prisoners in search of some shred of information supporting this view failed to ever turn up any evidence of any atomic weapons program in Iraq. Why are you letting yourself be led down this same path yet again? Have you no memory, have you no rational capacities, have you no sense of reality?

Senator Schumer, I am not sure what constituency you imagine you are representing, but it is certainly not one I have contact with on any regular basis in the city of New York! If you cannot support a peace agreement now with Iran, I frankly think it is quite unlikely you will be able to win another election in this state in the future.

Yours,
--*******, an actual constituent

Please feel free to pile on, particulary if you vote in New York: http://www.schumer.senate.gov/contact/email-chuck

because there was no way on earth that people like Murray and Harry Reid weren't going to support the treaty.

Or Maria Cantwell, the other Senator from Washington.

Knowing that these three were on the undecided list made me realize that a lot of Dems on that list are probably in the same position . . . not so undecided, really. Just not ready to come forward, for whatever reason.
