Sheriff Babeu drops out of congressional race

Paul Babeu is dropping out of the race for Arizona's 4th Congressional District and
will instead run for re-election as Pinal County sheriff.
KPHO-TV reports Babeu's campaign released a statement from him Friday announcing the decision.
Babeu says he made the decision to run again because his chief deputy cannot run for the office.
Babeu says when he began his congressional candidacy, he had promised a continuity of leadership in the sheriff's office.

Federal officials say Chief Deputy Steve Henry oversees those who control federal funds given to the Pinal County Sheriff's Office. Because of that, Henry cannot run while serving as chief deputy.
And the fact that he is currently the subject of a federal investigation, directly related to his campaign doesn't help.

http://www.azcentral.com/news/politics/articles/2012/05/11/20120511paul-babeu-dropping-out-gop-congressional-race.html
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu announced Friday that he will end his Republican bid for Congress
and run instead for a second term as sheriff in the desert county southeast of Phoenix.
His decision could alter dramatically the direction of both races, as he leaves two major GOP candidates
to duke it out for the U.S. House of Representatives in rural northwest Arizona and enters a crowded field for sheriff.
"Many Pinal residents have asked me to stay as their Sheriff and continue this fight," Babeu wrote in a
news release sent to supporters at 4:01 a.m. "Many worried that my voice and impact would be lost if elected
as one of 435 members of Congress. I was elected because I listen and respond to the people I represent.
I want to continue to serve as Sheriff and focus on performance and results of public safety. No one can argue
that our Sheriff's Office isn't better off than four years ago."

Arizona Sheriff Paul Babeu drops bid for Congress after fallout from campaign volunteer scandal
(CBS/AP) FLORENCE, Ariz. - A conservative Arizona sheriff who announced he is gay amid allegations of abuse of power said Friday he is no longer running for Congress, CBS affiliate KPHO-TV reports.
Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu's campaign said Friday that he is dropping out of Arizona's 4th Congressional District race and will instead seek re-election as sheriff.
The Republican lawman is known for his stance on illegal immigration and border security. His image took a beating this year when a former boyfriend claimed the sheriff threatened him with deportation.

In April, the Office of Special Counsel, which was looking into allegations that Babeu and several key aides were working on his congressional campaign with county resources while on duty, issued subpoenas to Babeu's office and the county board after Babeu's office refused to turn over two laptops for inspection.
