President Obama issued a statement Sunday saying he was "heartbroken" after a White House staffer, Jake Brewer, was killed in a bicycle accident.
"Armed with a brilliant mind, a big heart, and an insatiable desire to give back, Jake devoted his life to empowering people and making government work better for them. He worked to give citizens a louder voice in our society. He engaged our striving immigrants. He pushed for more transparency in our democracy. And he sought to expand opportunity for all," the president said. "I've often said that today's younger generation is smarter, more determined, and more capable of making a difference than I was as a young man. Jake was proof of that."
Brewer, 34, was a senior policy adviser in the White House Office of the Chief Technology office. The Washington Post reported Saturday that he was killed in Howard County, Maryland, during a bicycle ride that raised money to fight cancer. Brewer apparently lost control of his bicycle at a sharp curve along the race course, crossed the double yellow line and had a collision with an oncoming vehicle.
His wife, Mary Katharine Ham, is a conservative commentator and journalist. She shared news of her husband's death in a post on Instagram Sunday.

(2,004 posts)A similar tragedy happened in a bicycling event raising money for cancer near my home. These fund raising events are not necessarily well thought out for safety of the participants and the people living and traveling on the event routes. No one wants to criticize the organizers, as they are raising money for good causes and are not very well regulated, if at all.
Perhaps the death of such a high profile individual will bring some much needed planning for such events for the future. Many college intramural program planners could give some much needed advice for the safety of participants.
So sorry for his family.

Mary Katharine Ham gives birth, two months after White House staffer husband Jake Brewer died
By Jessica Contrera December 1 at 9:59 AM
@mjcontrera
Conservative pundit Mary Katharine Ham gave birth on Saturday to a little girl she named in honor of husband, White House technology adviser Jake Brewer. Brewer was killed in September when he was struck by a car during a charity bike race in Maryland.
World, meet Garnet J. Brewer! Ham wrote on Instagram Monday. At 7 lbs., 13 oz. & 21 in., she made her appearance after 5.5 hours of blessedly safe & awesome natural labor Nov. 28 at 5:15 am, reminding her mom this childbirth thing is no joke, hard core, & beautiful. Her middle initial is for her dad, Jake.
{She was a conservative pundit. He was a liberal activist. At home, none of that mattered.}
Garnet has a head full of dark hair and was wrapped in one of Jakes favorite blue shirts immediately after birth, Ham wrote in a message to friends.
The name Garnet has two meanings: It was Brewers January birthstone, and also the name of the snow-covered Wyoming canyon where the couple hiked when Ham was seven months pregnant with their first child, Georgia. Brewer, 34, died when Ham was seven months pregnant with Garnet.
