Latest Kansas-Missouri conflict over license plates
Source: KC Star
"Theres an old saying in college sports: If one school refuses to play you, then you can be darn sure you dont let that school have specialized license plates in your state.
Wait, what?
Well, maybe its not an old saying. But according to two Missouri state senators, its a philosophy that now exists. So when word leaked out late last week that the University of KU Alumni Association was attempting to get specialized KU plates approved by lawmakers in Missouri, Bill Stouffer, R-Napton, and Kurt Schaefer, R-Columbia, sprang into action.
Stouffer and Schaefer, both graduates of Mizzou, announced that they would file a petition to stop the approval of a KU license plate."

(96,793 posts)There are no state issued special plates in Kansas. Only for veterans. So a vanity plate is all you can get if you want one that says Mizzou. There's one in my neighborhood and I saw one on I70 a few months ago that said Mizzou 1.

And please remind your esteemed state senators that KU isn't playing Mizzou because they bolted for a new conference...You can't run off with your mistress and then wonder why your ex-wife doesn't want a roll in the hay when you're back in town...

Makes you wonder which part of Mizzou choosing to play in a different conference this brainiac is forgetting.

(96,793 posts)This is a ridiculous accusation. If Mizzou had stayed in the same conference, they would be playing KU. It's not all that complicated. My dad was a coach. Non conference games are often scheduled years in advance.
Blue_Tires
(55,445 posts)1. No point in letting a "nonconference" school have access to the K.C. market (and that's the Big XII party line, not just KU's)
2. KU has historically been Mizzou's highest-grossing game...In basketball, KU can schedule any top team in the country to sell out the Sprint Center, and still keep the bulk of the gate (as opposed to having to split it 50-50 with Mizzou)...In football, KU can schedule another home game, and keep all the gate, win or lose...
3. I'm pretty sure a token offer was extended to Mizzou, but the terms were so (understandably) one-sided that Mizzou would have been suicidal to accept

(3,269 posts)Mizzou is going to ROCK Kansas City now that it's in the SEC. Recruiting of KC players has strengthened already. I loved it when the Mizzou players from KC stood outside the Sprint Center after the tourney win and declared that "This is OUR city. Kansas City, MISSOURI."
I don't like the SEC and I valued the Big 12. But the SEC games are going to be a pretty compelling story line for the entire state, especially with Missouri's recruiting on the rise.

(3,269 posts)KU is slipping off the radar because they are excited about the future. The University is anticipating much more revenue, as is Columbia, which is creating special activities for the traveling SEC fans. There are major facilities renovations in the works.
I'm older, and I appreciate the tradition of the rivalry. A lot of Mizzou fans think that's a silly view.

(21,046 posts)I say "fiddle" because it's easier to say, but I refuse to play country or shitkick. Classical people like a higher bridge which means higher action and gut-wrapped-in-steel strings. country people don't know enough to wipe the rosin off their fiddles (that white gunk) and like low bridges and steel strings.

(55,445 posts)I'm a Virginian...Seeing Maryland/Duke/North Carolina/etc. alumni plates makes me want to stab something, but those people got together, filled out the proper forms, and paid their money so the Commonwealth had no reason to deny them...
What's next? Should the state fine any parents in Missouri with the unmitigated gall to send their kid to KU in light of the recent unpleasantness?
jumptheshadow
(3,269 posts)Virginia vs. any of those schools is a shadow of the deepest, bitterest athletic rivalry in the NCAA. One with its roots in blood. One in which my school was on the wrong side of history.
The Big 12 and KU have tried to declare "ownership" of Kansas City for recruiting and TV negotiation purposes.
Big news: It's Kansas City, Missouri.
When Mizzou left for the SEC (NOT my favorite decision), KU refused to play any more games with us. Until we meet again, and this ridiculous "war" calms down, Missouri should not be doing anything to promote KU at all.
The vote was unanimous, by the way.
proud2BlibKansan

(96,793 posts)Non conference games are scheduled years in advance. If Mizzou wants to play KU, they should have remained in the Big 12. To choose to leave and then turn around and blame KU for not wanting to play them is ridiculous. KU didn't kick Mizzou out of the conference; they chose to leave.
jumptheshadow
(3,269 posts)Mizzou offered to schedule games; KU has no interest. Google it. You will find the stories everywhere. They could talk to Mizzou about scheduling a few years down the road if non-conference games are the issue.
What will happen is some network will offer a chunk of cash for that game. Then see how quickly KU comes to the table.
I don't understand why you are repeating something that is wrong and can be looked up.
proud2BlibKansan
(96,793 posts)Non conference games are scheduled way far in advance. There are usually few if any open slots, especially for football.
I don't think this is that hard to understand. My dad was a coach. His non conference games were set several years in advance.
Blue_Tires
(55,445 posts)Sole ownership, since Mizzou abandoned it...What other conference is banging down the door to put their championship games there? Let Mizzou schedule a non-con at the Sprint Center and actually try to sell out the place...
Mizzou made a move out of financial self-interest, which I can understand...KU is simply doing the same --business, not personal...
jumptheshadow
(3,269 posts)It's a television game. And a recruiting game.
Tell me that if a KU-WV game overlapped with MU-GA or MU-Alabama or MU-FL that KC will be tuned into KU-WV. If James Franklin is healthy, the MU offense will be very entertaining, especially with top recruit Dorial Green-Beckham catching passes. Frosh QB Matty Mauk, who set passing records at the high school level, is waiting in the wings. KC's TV market will be owned by Mizzou during football season if key players don't hurt themselves.
Mizzou has also landed some top transfers in BB and is doing very well with recruiting for future years. If Mizzou and Kentucky are both in the Top Ten, then that game will sell out anywhere in Missouri. Although the SEC will probably base its conference championships elsewhere, be prepared for a little KC surprise every now and then.

(3,269 posts)And, yes, it does sound crazy.
There's a bloody history that originated during the Civil War. It eventually morphed into a relatively innocuous athletic rivalry...but the strains we are seeing now have deep roots.
