New York, New Hampshire, Louisiana & Minnesota Residents Will Need Passports To Fly Domestic
Source: inhomeland security
Forget about delays, flying domestic just got more difficult.
Following increased security measures after September 11th, a new act is calling into question the fortitude of some states identifications, requiring residents to offer another form of identification when flying domestically.
Residents of New York, New Hampshire, Louisiana, Minnesota and American Samoa are affected by the REAL ID Act, which accounts for over 31 million Americans. In those five states, residents do not have to show proof of citizenship or residency in order to obtain a license, which is what makes their identification noncompliant.
The act, which intends to strengthen security in the country, was enacted by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in 2005, but the new rules will go in effect no sooner than 2016. Which means residents of those states need to start considering their options.

(9,688 posts)Sometimes I have a mean little voice inside me, that I don't really like, and it will speak to me in the voices of people like Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh. Believe me, it sucks.
But I would say that tattooing is 20th century and a microchip is the way of the future. If one truly wants to keep ones homeland "secure" against a flood of refugees. The best part of microchipping is that the technology is ever advancing so there are huge chances for incredibly fat profits along with increasing social control. What's not to love about it?

(13,508 posts)It was obviously the 10 years of protests in between that has been delaying implementation ... wasn't it?

(14,337 posts)Been decades since I got my first NY Drivers License, but I do remember that when I renewed it I never had to show proof of citizenship.
Here in Florida you have to show that proof every time you renew your license too. For a married woman, who changed her name, that means not just her birth certificate but her marriage license also. Pain going through all your documents looking for BOTH.
While I understand that a Passport is very expensive, it is a lot easier just to show them that one piece of ID for a Driver's License. I did that to get my Florida License, and for renewal.
What a nightmare this is going to create at airports.

(4,199 posts)Seriously. Only surface crossings -- car, train, bus, bicycle, etc -- you can't use an enhanced ID as a passport for international flights.
I've gotten to use mine exactly once, on a car trip up to Montreal last year.

$50 for a new license so that I may have the privilege of visiting my folks in Florida should I choose to fly.
