Medical Marijuana Laws For States Supported By More Than Two-Thirds Of Republicans, Poll Finds
Source: Huffington Post
WASHINGTON -- Nearly three-quarters of Americans and more than two-thirds of Republicans believe federal officials should respect state laws on medical marijuana, a new Mason-Dixon survey of 1,000 likely 2012 general election voters found.
"What the results of this survey show is that there is absolutely no political justification for what President Barack Obama is doing with respect to medical marijuana laws," Steve Fox, director of government relations for The Marijuana Policy Project, told HuffPost on Tuesday afternoon. "Across the board ... there is extremely strong support for respecting state medical marijuana laws."
Medical cannabis is currently legal in 16 states and the District of Columbia but remains illegal under federal law, even in states that have passed laws allowing for its use in medical treatment. Federal officials have ramped up enforcement actions around state medical marijuana laws but mounting evidence suggests such actions may not poll well in November.
Asked whether voters felt President Obama should respect the medical marijuana laws in these states, or use federal resources to arrest and prosecute individuals who are acting in compliance with state medical marijuana laws, 74 percent of voters nationally said the president should respect state laws, 15 percent said he should prosecute in accordance with federal law and 11 percent weren't sure.

(1,364 posts)anyone would really believe that. It seems to be a drumbeat for everything. "Wait'll he gets his second term and then........ (fill in the blank)." I guess he will walk on water, too. Let's face it, if it didn't happen when he had a majority of Dems in both houses, it's probably not going to happen in the second term either. Right now, I don' t see the strong possibility of Dems in control in both houses of Congress, nor do I hear anyone even remotely predicting same.

(10,622 posts)I personally think that if he decides to keep it illegal (even in states that disagree, and how dare they) he is doing so because it is the right thing to do.
He is leading right now on this issue and people whine because his lead is to bust state legal dispensaries, I say, follow him or get out of the way, he knows what is best for us, not us.
It is telling that so many Republicans want it legal as medicine, they all hate him so the correct answer is obviously the opposite of what they want.
He is not here to help us, he is here to teach us how we should be.
Too many think he is wrong about this or that, haters ALL!!! He is always right, we are only right if we follow his lead.
I am glad that at least you get it.

(793 posts)Constitutional when passed by the states involved. So what did he do during the first term that took so much time, health care, remember.
So after 2010 he didn't have the house and yes times have changed, a little bit don't you think?
I also think that the house will go back to Democratic control this election. But he really does not need the house to do it in the next term. He needs to tell Mr Holder to lighten up, and I don't think he going to do that this year.

I believe a similar show of support for medical marijuana could really help President Obama's reelection campaign. It would show his compassion, independence, leadership, and that he is a man of his word.

(13,184 posts)Ellen Rosenblum defeated Dwight Holden, 63% to 37%. Medical marijuana advocates had mobilized for her (really against former interim US Attorney Holden) and national drug refomers kicked in $200,000 to help punish a participant in the federal crackdown on medical marijuana. That's it. Make it hurt.
