The National Weather Service has upgraded Hurricane Joaquin to a Category 4 storm that is "extremely dangerous."
The storm has already sustained winds from 131 mph to 151 mph. Forecasters expect the storm to stay offshore of the Eastern U.S., but there will still be coastal flooding and very heavy rains all the way up the seaboard.
The storm however is expected to weaken as it moves along the Eastern coast. Forecasters expect Joaquin will reach eastern Long Island sometime early next week, perhaps Monday night into Tuesday.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced a state of emergency ahead of Hurricane Joaquin, which is expected to start impacting the state with heavy rainfall on Friday.

(13,685 posts).....Came Joaquin...
The heat content of the waters it grew over are record high temps.
The weather systems on either side of the hurricane are keeping it from moving and the experts are quite confounded.
They do not know where it will go.
If you live along the east coast of the US, you may meet Joaquin head on some day soon, so be prepared.

We are going to have a nice dinner (swordfish), drink (ample beers!) - pack up and head for the ferry in the morning - I fully expect tomorrow to be a bit of a zoo - oh well. Wish us luck! Looks like a deluge from Swan Quarter (that is probably where we will head) to Raleigh.

(60,014 posts)we always spend two weeks here in the fall - it is inevitable that a storm would decide to (perhaps) drop in on one of our visits!
Stay or go...stay or go...still waiting to see what is recommended by those in the know (those who live here have seen it all - their thought is wait to see what the 5 PM advisory brings)

(62,530 posts)the thing we would always look for is if the Hurricane clears Cape Hatterus. If it hits it, then it usually turn into a tropical storm, but if it clears it...look out.
That's why Sandy was so bad, it was out to sea and easily cleared the cape.
I have to talk to my Sister. She lives in Queens.

(5,400 posts)I even worked on the clean-up after Sandy, on Long Beach. That was insane.
But from what I'm reading, even if it heads up our way it will lose steam and become a tropical storm or less. Even a Tropical Storm can be a disaster when it combines with high tides and heavy rains. But the beating from the wind is less severe and much more local in its damage. recovery is generally quicker.
Though if the storm picks up speed and makes a beeline for Long Island, all bets are off.

(70,214 posts)I saw a article not to long ago about climate change and Norfolk--esp. the naval base that is located there. They were talking of moving the entire base--water logged for long time now. cost in the millions if they did that. I do not recall many details but it seemed that it would not be feasible to try to put up barriers or sea barriers. Do not recall why not.

(23,156 posts)It looks as if it's supposed to diminish significantly in strength by the time it makes landfall. Although a category 1 storm still isn't anything to ignore.

(18,868 posts)NOAA is showing this sucker will hit land north of the Carolinas
and the Weather Channel is saying it will not hit land. They show it kind of moving back out to sea. It would be great if they were right.

Therefore, there's a good chance by Sunday/Monday it will steer out to sea completely.
