The United Food and Commercial Workers union has declined to object to the sale of the Yonkers A&P supermarket to CVS, a local labor leader said.
John Niccollai, head of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 464a, which covers the Yonkers A&P supermarket, initially said his organization expects to file an objection to any store sales where the winning bidder is not a union grocery store operator.
However, lawyers for the union filed documents Friday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court saying they had no objections to the Nepperhan Avenue sale or auction of a second A&P at 1757 Central Park Ave. to its landlord, which wants to terminate the lease. Instead, the union will oppose the sale of A&P supermarkets to non-union grocery store operators, lawyers said.
Niccollai said the decision was made to only oppose a fraction of the sales, and only those where lawyers believe they had a good case. Lawyers believe that they can oppose to the sale of a supermarket to a non-union grocery store operator but did not believe their collective bargaining agreements covered the sale of any A&P supermarkets to a pharmacy, developer or someone with no connections to the grocery business.

Arlene Miller, of Yonkers, shown here as she was walking into the store on Oct. 7, 2015, doesn't want to see her local A&P close because there are no other supermarkets nearby that she likes.
