Saudi blogger's flogging 'to resume', says wife

Source: Telegraph UK

Saudi Arabia is to resume the flogging of Raif Badawi, the blogger whose first 50 lashes became the centre of an international outcry, his wife says she has been told.

Ensaf Haidar, who is now living in Canada with the couple’s children, said the same “informed source” who originally tipped her off to the flogging of her husband in January had told her the punishment was about to resume.

If the statement is true, it will be a snub to Britain, which privately and publicly has intervened in the case, and especially the Prince of Wales, regarded as one of the kingdom’s “oldest friends”, who raised Mr Badawi’s case personally with King Salman on a visit in February.

It may also be a response to the government's decision to drop a contract with the Saudi prison system worth £5.9 million, believed to have been taken in protest at Saudi Arabia's human rights record.

Apparently flogging bloggers is a tool of the Saudis to score points on the world stage. Sick they are.

1. With allies like this...

...sheesh. And we think of these folks as our friends. WTF is wrong with us.

I know, I know...oil.

Good that we scrapped that Carter plan for energy independence. The critics were right. It would have increased the cost of a gallon of gas to $1.30...and who in their right mind would be willing to pay a buck thirty.

Sheesh.

3. Not oil, oil money

The US gets very little oil if any from the Saudis. They do however sell them lots of weapons from US defense contractors.

4. yeah - really good point.

I guess I knew we didn't get a lot of oil from Saudi but didn't make the connection. When in doubt, follow the money.

Thanks.

7. These are our "allies"

People we curry favor with. People at whose whim we fight and die for.

13. He got in trouble for words he wrote on his website. sucks to not have freedom because of religion

doubt any of the '3 original religions' will ever go away but they all could use some evolution, upgrades and separating from government laws.

15. Well I agree it does suck.

Islam certainly could use a healthy does of evolution. Seem to be stuck in the 7th century. But it is something they have to do for themselves.

18. Because its unjust and oppresses people? Cultural relativism is bullshit.

Am I saying we should intervene militarily? No, but other pressures can be applied, economic, political, diplomatic, etc.

12. Just the thought of this is such torture for his family. Must be almost as bad for USA families,

when they know a family member is stuck in one of Americas prisons for sometimes many decades. Mental torture for all.

17. Saudi blogger Raif Badawi awarded Sakharov human rights prize

Saudi blogger Raif Badawi, whose flogging sentence caused an outcry, has been awarded the European Parliament's Sakharov human rights prize.

Parliament President Martin Schulz urged Saudi King Salman "to free him, so he can accept the prize".
...
Earlier this month he also won the Pen Pinter Prize for championing free speech.

The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has been awarded by the European Parliament since 1988 to individuals or organisations for their contribution to the fight for human rights and democracy.
