WRAPUP 1-NATO leaders map strategy for Afghanistan exit

Source: Reuters

CHICAGO, May 20 (Reuters) - NATO leaders gathered in Chicago on Sunday to chart a path out of Afghanistan as war-weary Western nations seek to fend off dissent in their alliance and ensure Afghanistan can hold a still-potent Taliban at bay when foreign troops withdraw.

President Barack Obama hosts the summit in his home town, Chicago, a day after leaders of major industrialized nations tackled Europe's debt crisis, backing keeping Greece in the euro zone and vowing to take steps necessary to revitalize the world economy.

The shadow cast by fiscal pressures in Europe and elsewhere will follow leaders from Obama's presidential retreat in Maryland to the talks on Afghanistan, an unwelcome weight on countries mindful of dwindling public support for a costly war that has not defeated the Taliban in more than 10 years.

The Obama administration, looking ahead to the November presidential election, is expected to emphasize a common alliance vision for gradually pulling most of the NATO force of around 130,000 by the end of 2014. It will also highlight Afghanistan's strides toward taking charge of its own security.

London: Troops of Britain's Special Air Service (SAS) will stay in Afghanistan beyond 2014 to conduct counter-terrorism operations against the remnants of Al Qaeda after British soldiers leave, a media report said.

Sources told the Daily Mail said members of the elite regiment will remain in Helmand province to help Afghan forces weed out the militants.

Officials said a "great majority" of British forces would come home but the SAS and their naval counterparts, the Special Boat Service, are almost certain to remain after the deadline.

Or mercs?

Notice the weasel words though: "almost certain to remain".

There. Simply plan.

The US already knows that this will happen, and so is trying to split and develop agents of influence in the Taleban.
