Pakistan blocks Twitter because of 'offensive material'

Source: BBC

Pakistani authorities have blocked access to the social media website Twitter because of messages they say are offensive to Islam.

They talked of "blasphemous and inflammatory" material although it is not clear exactly what the tweets said.

Some officials mentioned a 2010 Facebook competition involving pictures of the Prophet Muhammad, considered blasphemous by Muslims.

At that time access to about 1,000 websites was blocked.

The ban in 2010 lasted for around a fortnight until Facebook blocked access to the controversial page in Pakistan.

The chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority, Mohammed Yaseen, told the Associated Press (AP) news agency: "We have been negotiating with them (Twitter) until last night, but they did not agree to remove the stuff, so we had to block it.

Pakistan restores Twitter after block

Pakistani authorities have restored access to the social media website Twitter, hours after blocking it for messages deemed "offensive to Islam".

No clear reason was given for the ban, which came into force shortly after Interior Minister Rehman Malik said there were no plans to block Twitter.

Correspondents say it appeared to stem from tweets about a 2010 competition on Facebook to submit images of the Prophet Muhammad.

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) lifted the ban on Sunday, about eight hours after it came into force.

The religious right continue their march toward total control over the instruments of government.

They have been very effective at the local and state level. This has been part of their strategy for years.

Their desire is to impose their moral values on the rest of us. They pass laws intended to ensure Islamic "Sharia" law never becomes the law of the state. But in effect their desire is to impose their own "Sharia" law.

They want to regulate morality from what is taught in school to what a woman can do with her body to what two consenting adults can do in the privacy of their own homes.

There is no daylight between Islamic theocrats and the religious right in this country. They are one and the same.
