Dharun Ravi faces sentencing in webcam hate crime

Source: BBC News

A US student convicted of using a webcam to secretly film his room-mate in a gay encounter is being sentenced.

Dharun Ravi, 20, a former undergraduate at New Jersey's state university, was convicted in March on two charges of bias intimidation, a hate crime.

Prosecutors are calling for a sentence of up to 10 years in jail.

The case, in which Tyler Clementi killed himself days after he was filmed in a dorm room at Rutgers University, attracted national attention.

Judge won't overturn verdict in webcam case.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) -- A judge has denied a request to overturn the guilty verdict against a former Rutgers student who was convicted earlier this year of bias intimidation for using a webcam to spy on his roommate, who committed suicide days later.

Judge Glenn Berman says the trial for Dharun Ravi (dah-ROON' RAH'-vee) was fair.
