(CCA-owned private prison) Fatal Mississippi prison riot quelled, authorities say
Source: CNN
Authorities said early Monday they had put down a prison riot that claimed the life of a guard as it continued into the late evening Sunday.
Catlin Carithers, a 24-year-old senior correctional officer, died of injuries sustained in the disturbance at the Adams County Correctional Facility in Natchez, Mississippi, according to Tennessee-based Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), which owns the facility.
The county coroner said earlier the guard died of head injuries. Carithers joined the company in 2009, CCA said.
It was not immediately clear what prompted the riot, which began about 2:40 p.m. (3:40 p.m. ET) Sunday, officials said.

(11,518 posts)I've never heard of a case where someone argued a private corporation didn't have the authority to hold someone against their will. If someone knows of such a case I'm sure many here would love to hear about it.

Prisoners who have nothing to lose, and are bored, overcrowded and frustrated, they'll lash out.

(82,849 posts)She'd been with the company for three years. I wonder what the qualifications and responsibilities are for being a "senior" correctional officer, or if it's just a title a person gets after a certain amount of time on the job?
As far as what prompted the riot, we may never know, as that would be too revealing of CCA's company secrets or something.

(11,862 posts)What must the junior correctional officers be like? 16? 18? Most have under 3 years? Three years makes one a senior? hell it takes four in high school!..I bet the turnover is utterly amazing (and not in a good 'amazing' way)
