Mitt Romney: President Obama Out Of Touch Like Marie Antoinette
MASON CITY, Iowa -- Mitt Romney on Thursday sought to portray President Barack Obama as out of touch with the struggles of everyday Americans -- a charge he himself has often faced -- by comparing the president to a former French queen who was overthrown during the French Revolution.
"When the president's characterization of our economy was, 'It could be worse,' it reminded me of Marie Antoinette: 'Let them eat cake,'" Romney said, referring to the infamously dismissive remark toward the poor attributed to the queen.
"This is not a time to be talking about, 'It could be worse.' It's a time to recognize that things should be better," Romney said during an interview on his campaign bus with The Huffington Post. "And the president's policies have failed the American people, have led to 25 million people still being out of work. He didn't cause the recession, but he has made it deeper and has made the recovery more tepid and the pain last longer."
Obama said during a Wisconsin town hall meeting in June 2010 that "it's hard to argue sometimes, things would have been a lot worse" without the stimulus plan he pushed through Congress. He also said that while unemployment was high, it was not as high as it could have been if he had done nothing.

Hmmmmmm, how'd he get all that cash, pray tell?
Couldn't have been by pillaging companies, firing their workers, selling their assets and pocketing the profits, no?

(17,493 posts)Antonia Fraser covered that, and a good many other things, in her biography of the ill-fated French queen.
And shame on Romney, for multiple sins. They include:
....deploying an apocryphal quote and being either too ignorant, dishonest, or unimaginative to come up with something better.
...recycling a myth about a French queen when he spent considerable time in France and speaks the language and, damn it, should know better.
...ignoring the obvious (as in, he's worth hundreds of millions himself).
...going about claiming that Americans with employer-provided insurance plans get their health care for free once they've paid the deductible and that moreover we need to repeal the Patient Protection Protection and Affordable Care Act (Better we should shop for health care, according to Romney; we need to know how much things cost before we get lifesaving care).

Republicans, who are blind to their own malevolence, lead the way when it comes to being out of touch with the needs of ordinary citizens, and they are masters at and have no problem using the... "Shift the blame game."
Democrats on the other hand, can at least show a little chivalry and honor amongst thieves, and they are more likely to subscribe to the idea that... "People who live in glass houses shouldnt throw stones."

(12,150 posts)The mischaracterization of Obama's words and policies on the right has reached the level of full-blown psychosis, although maybe it was already there. (Remember "He's going to take all our guns"? They're still saying it!)
Modern conservatism is clearly a mental illness, and should be diagnosed and treated as such. Perhaps the Affordable Care Act has some provisions in it that will allow sick-in-the-head conservatives to get the help they need. God, I hope so!

The Wizard
(13,735 posts)fails to address is that things would be much better if Republicans hadn't sabotaged the American people by blocking all efforts to improve the economy and job market because they are looking for cheap political gain at the expense of working class Americans with the hope that the pain they caused will be pinned on President Obama.
They do own the media and can project their brand of hateful insanity onto the masses with their massive advantage in the propaganda that's presented as main stream media.
Republicans are to American politics what snuff film directors are to the cinema. Kamikaze politics harms the least among us first and worst.
There's something immoral about Republicans, and Nit Wit Mitt cares nothing about the working class because those who back him are primarily concerned with a two tiered system that enslaves the 99% for the benefit of the wealthy elites.

At least the President has tried to do something to fix some problems, but a coalition of Republicans and crooked Democrats have thwarted his efforts. (Crooked Republican is a redundancy; the Republicans long ago raised corruption to a positive principle.)
Speaking of being out of touch with reality, Mitt, aren't you the ignoramus who said "Corporations are people." Really, Mitt, you need to take remedial biology.

(9,445 posts)Mitt Romney is the same guy who owns a $12 million La Jolla home which he is trying to expand to 11,000+sq.ft. While the average American home size in 2009 was about 2700+sq.ft. That means Romney's house will be more than five times the size of the average American home.
Things get worse for Mr. Romney. As the link below will show Romney still has and had multiple homes like that. According to the article, Romney has a townhouse in Boston and a $10 million vacation home in New Hamphire. It still gets worse for Romney. According to the article, Romney recently unloaded a couple homes. Yes, a couple homes.
In 2009, Romney sold his 6,400 sq.ft. home in Massachusetts for $3.5 million. In addition, Romney sold a 9,500 sq.ft. Ski lodge in Utah for $5.25 million.
So, to conclude Romney has had or has at least three homes that are two plus times as large as the average American home. In addition, the combined price of the homes Romney owns or has owned total about $30 million. Romney should not try to claim that the president is out of touch.
