Leveson Inquiry: Jeremy Paxman Says Piers Morgan Told Him How To Hack Phones
Source: Huffington Post
Newsnight presenter Jeremy Paxman has told the Leveson inquiry into press standards that Piers Morgan told him how to hack phones at a dinner in 2002.
Paxman said the former Daily Mirror editor was present at a dinner he attended at Canary Wharf.
Also at the dinner, he claimed, were Sir Victor Blank, the chairman of Trinity Mirror, as well as Phillip Green and Ulrika Jonsson.
He alleged that at the dinner Morgan teased Jonsson about a conversation he claimed to have heard between her and England manager Sven Goran Eriksson.

(30,404 posts)I have wondered how Piers Morgan got Larry King's job.
Of all the fine journalist that we have in America, why Piers? It is difficult to understand more than three words in every sentence that comes out of his mouth!
How , why did he get the job?
Was it a pay-back for all the dirty tricks that he was a part of ~ can he go directly to jail?
I hope so!
It does not surprise me one inch that he was involved in the dirty tricks.

I personally think that the Morgan hiring was a way to protect CNN from the machinations of Murdoch--that PR would serve as a blocker against any Murdoch bullshit. Morgan was looking to get past the whole Murdoch machine. That might not work out for him, if this bears out.
Who knows, though?

(101,308 posts)From 1995 to 2004 he edited The Mirror, a rival to Murdoch's Sun, until he had to resign, after publishing photos apparently showing British soldiers abusing Iraqis, that turned out to be fake.

It's a mistake, I think, to see Morgan as 'Murdoch's man'. He's out for himself, and always was. While at the Mirror, he was lucky not to be charged with share fraud (2 of his journalists who pushed shares in the paper, after Morgan had bought them, were convicted). But he wasn't just a Murdoch lackey - he opposed the Iraq war, for instance.
It can be only Piers Morgan's cock-up over the "fake" pictures that prevented the Mirror wading in with aggression that would have made Greg Dyke's look genteel. It could have pointed out that from the very beginning the Mirror was demanding more time for the United Nations inspectors to confirm the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Had this happened, and the necessary UN resolution been passed, the paper would have supported military action. Had the inspectors still emerged empty-handed, history might have been different.
As a senior executive told me: "The Mirror's was never a pacifist campaign. It was never anti-war, full stop. It was urging caution so that the country did not get caught up in an American right-wing imperialist administration grabbing a country's oil and blindly seeking revenge for 9/11." In other words, with the exception of those photographs, Piers Morgan and the Mirror were absolutely right about Iraq.

(135,425 posts)I do think some may have BELIEVED that he knew where bodies were buried at Murdoch's empire, and that made him useful to them, in their eyes, anyway.

He also speaks English.
Maybe it's my ears but I can't understand most of what PM says.
Wish he would go back to England/
