Russia Plays Down Idea Of Coalition With West To Strike ISIS In Syria

MOSCOW The Kremlin on Friday played down the possibility of a grand coalition with the West to strike the Islamic State in Syria, despite personal visits by French President François Hollande to both Washington and Moscow following a spate of horrific terrorist attacks tied to the terrorist group.
At the moment, unfortunately, our partners are not ready to work as one coalition, Dmitry Peskov, President Vladimir Putins personal spokesman, told reporters during a conference call on Friday.
Peskovs comments came less than 24 hours after Putin himself sounded hopeful notes at a meeting with Hollande in the Kremlin, where he said Russia was ready to cooperate with the coalition which is led by the United States.
But Russia has sought cooperation on its terms, providing diplomatic and now military shelter to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and attacking rebel groups that include the Islamic State but also more moderate opponents of Assad backed by Western countries. President Obama and other Western leaders have sought to bring Putin into a U.S.-led coalition instead, a force that Putin has called illegal because it is launching airstrikes in Syria without Assads permission.

(6,419 posts)Seems like you don't like criticism of Putin.
Are you yet another apologist of that fascist dictatorship, or what?

(1,145 posts)Western neocon-inspired military adventurism and unending war all over the world.
Putin has practically been pleading for good relations with Europe and the US for years, but that is not what our leaders want. They want any credible obstacle to total domination of the globe removed and Putin's Russia presents such an obstacle.
I'm thinking you wouldn't notice fascism if you saw it, especially if you can skip over what the US has become since 9/11 and Obama's continuation of the Bush/Cheney worldview.

Seriously, where can I find info on these "more moderate opponents of Assad? Is there any online? Have they published their stance on women's rights? Treatment of gays? Religious tolerance? Democracy? Protection of minorities?
Are these "more moderate opponents", wow, what a finely tune phrase THAT is -- capable of covering such a wide swath of intolerant groups -- really just garden-variety intolerant Islamists that just don't burn people alive in cages like ISIS?

There are believed to be as many as 1,000 armed opposition groups in Syria, commanding an estimated 100,000 fighters.
Many of the groups are small and operate on a local level, but a number have emerged as powerful forces with affiliates across the country or formed alliances with other groups that share a similar agenda. Here we look at the most prominent.
