Trump demands CNN pay him $5M to participate in next debate
Source: CBS
MACON, Georgia -- Business mogul Donald Trump demanded on Monday that CNN, the host of the next GOP debate, pay him $5 million dollars to participate, with the proceeds to be donated to veterans.
"I won't do the debate unless they pay me 5 million dollars," Trump said.
snip>
Trump made the demands at a rally in Macon, Georgia as a result of what he deemed unfair treatment by the network of his candidacy, including a meeting with African-American pastors earlier in the day at Trump Tower. At first he seemed unsure. Trump asked the crowd if he should make the payment a condition of his participation in the debate.
"You have to tell me because I know what they're going to say," Trump said. "Trump is a chicken."
"If I do this, it could be he's playing too cute, Trump said. "[And] maybe I don't do well, and maybe my real polls, which are the polls we're leading by so much, maybe they go down." Trump also said he could face repercussions in the polls as a result of the gambit of not participating in the debate.

(25,241 posts)You are sponsoring the debate so he could show what he is made of to become president of the U.S.
If he doesn't get paid - it's at his peril. The other candidates will be able to take advantage of his not showing up and gain or maybe even surpass his lead. He's only hurting himself. Call his bluff - don't pay him. Let him sit home and watch the debate and what the other candidates will have to say about him not being there.
After the debate is over - and he is taken down a notch - donate $5 million to the veterans. The veterans win. The American People win. CNN wins for standing up to this bully. And Trump loses.

(25,183 posts)CNN will tell him to shove it, he will say that they're anti-American troops, and he'll magnanimously give a veteran's organization the five million dollars anyway. It will buy him way more publicity than spending it on TV and radio advertising.
How far would a mere $100,000 per state go in each of them for billboards and ads? Not as far as this gambit is likely to go. And in the end CNN gets lousy ratings for the Trump-less debate, who's going to watch GOP candidates avoid beating up on Ben Carson?

And you can bet that is the "Veterans' group" he is trying to shake down CNN for. That money will go right into Trump's pocket.

(26,281 posts)(much like a drug addict) which is why he is doing what he doing and it has nothing to do with him wanting to be President and in fact he doesnt really want to "be" President at all he just wants the attention that he is getting.
When that attention fades (and it will) he go and do something else to get his next fix just like any other drug addict.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)For the fade, though? Haven't his supporters surprised us all?
I'm wondering if Trump has become addicted to the heightened attention of a candidate. He has supposedly pledged to spend a billion on his election, and the laughable has become shockingly possible. Trump may just not fade until November 6, and even after of course.
What do you want to bet he already sees himself as a magnificent "statesman" on the world stage? An easy guess is that Trump will always be eager to give the world the benefit of his wisdom, and especially the next president...

he's bad for the party and they've finally realized it

(5,842 posts)I think it was CNN that got extorted as time as well.
To the best of my knowledge whichever channel it was didn't cave because if they had you know Trump would have bragged about it for weeks.
Given the FOX News debate exposed him as a nasty thin skinned jackass vis a vis his continuing feud with Megyn Kelly you'd think Trump would demand payment from them next time around as well.
