Syria deal for rebels to leave last Homs district: governor

Source: AFP

A deal has been reached for the evacuation of Syrian opposition fighters from the last district under their control in the central city of Homs, the provincial governor told AFP Tuesday.

"All the rebels will leave Waer (district) within two months. A group of 200 to 300 armed men will leave in the first step, which will begin on Saturday," Talal Barazi said.

He said the first stage of the deal would last a week and would see "some heavy and medium weapons turned over to authorities."

Some families of rebels will also leave.

"The agreement was reached after a meeting Tuesday between Barazi and representatives of rebel groups present in Waer, including Al-Nusra Front, the Syrian affiliate of Al-Qaeda."

Ah, yes, Al-Qaeda... our moderate islamist rebels, apparently. It would be interesting to know how many of the 2000 fighters evacuating are foreign Islamist radicals too -- Al-Qaeda has a track record of bringing those in.

Certainly no sane person is going to object to a UN facilitated arrangement to remove Al-Qaeda from Homs, right? I mean we all still feel that Al-Qaeda is worse than the Syrian government, right?

"The talks between rebel commanders and officials of Homs province aim to end the armed manifestation there by securing the evacuation of 3,000 rebels from the neighborhood into rebel-held areas in the northern province of Idlib."

That is far from Homs. When other areas of Homs were evacuated last year, the insurgents were evacuated to a pocket of insurgent-controlled areas in the north of Homs governate.
