One of the kidnappers has confessed to police that the girl had been sold so her organs could be harvested. Whether that actually happened is still unknown as her fate remains unclear after almost a year.
The case in the town of Buesaco in southern Colombia has pulled into sharp focus the appalling illegal trade in human body parts in Latin America.
Paula Nicole Palacios Narvaez was grabbed as she came out of school in December last year and nobody has seen or heard from her since.
Police have now managed to capture all five people involved in the kidnapping.

(14,733 posts)Even in decades old dystopian fiction, when people were being used for 'organ banks', they were using convicted criminals sentenced to death. (Admittedly, as demand grew, so did the number of crimes that just happened to come with such a sentence.) But schoolchildren?
There are days you have to wonder if climate change wiping out humans is actually the Biblical Flood. That it was actually a prescient prediction, not a supposedly historical occurrence. That a God does exist, and he gave us the free will so that we WOULD destroy ourselves when we became 'too wicked'.

(14,733 posts)'Ringworld' universe. He did a whole bunch of books with a common timeline, and Earth went through a rather dark period in them in which humanity was scrambling for ways to live longer, and the richest and most powerful people had gotten laws enacted to allow death sentence prisoners to be 'broken up' as spare parts. There was another idea brought up, I don't recall if it was Niven or other authors, wherein they found a way to wipe the mind and use the entire 'young' body for an old person' mind. I think they've actually recently had a movie like that, in face.
But humans always seem to find a way to use new technology to deny the humanity of other humans, so it's not shocking, no matter how sad, to actually read a story like in the OP.

(12,667 posts)Part of the "Gil the Arm" series. People would get death sentences minor felonies and could plea-bargain misdemeanors with organ donations so that the body parts could be harvested. I've got an old copy somewhere.

(14,733 posts)I vaguely thought I remembered reference to it in the one where the Belter Brennan runs into the Pak that makes it to Earth, becomes a Protector himself, then keeps 'sampling' his bloodline over hundreds of years to keep his interest up so he can hang around to fight future Protectors who head towards Earth.

(1,333 posts)won't be strong enough to run the circulatory system of a grown adult? I hear these kinds of stories and I wonder what kind of person is heartless enough to take this girls life to save their little kid's life.
That or she is being kidnapped for sex trafficking.

(2,003 posts)Just that organs have become available for a price. And if they're desperate to save their child's life, they might prefer to not ask questions they don't really want the answers to.
