Solar Farm Rejected Amid Fears It Will 'Suck Up The Sun's Energy'

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by TexasTowelie (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: Roanoke-Chowan Herald-News and Huffington Post

Woodland Town council in North Carolina rejected plans to rezone land for a solar farm after residents voiced fears it would cause cancer, stop plants from growing and suck up all the energy from the sun.

Bobby Mann said the farm would "suck up all the energy from the sun and businesses would not come to Woodland," the Roanoke-Chowan Herald-News reports.

Retired science teacher Jane Mann feared the proposed solar ranch could hinder photosynthesis -- the process of converting light energy from the sun into chemical energy for fuel -- in the area and stop plants from growing.

The town rejected the solar for financial reasons. The reporter found the stupidest person to interview about it.

The council also voted to put a moratorium on future solar farms.

just repeating what they said to the city council.

To be fair, the general gist was "there is nothing in it for us, it's hurting 'property values', so we don't want it."

The lunatics were just more quotable.

I live in NC, and I wish I could say that such ignorance is rare. Sadly, I can't.

Other articles said there already are two solar farms being built in the area. This would be #3, but required a zoning change, triggering this meeting.

However, the reporter did manage to find the craziest person they could to interview.

Would you like to hear about the time a resident insisted they should not be required to pay for trash service because they produced zero trash? Actually happened at a city council meeting. The resident was illegally dumping their trash in a business's dumpster, so they felt they should not have to pay the city to haul trash from their house.

However, the reporter did manage to find the craziest person they could to interview.

This makes it seem like selective quoting. These statements come from what was said at a public meeting, not solicited by the reporter. Having attended a number of public meetings over the years, I can say that "quotable" folks are always in attendance, and if they say something particularly amusing, the reporter will include it if they have space to fill.

... despite the observation that the town council may have had financial concerns about the solar farm, the fact remains that unsupervised adults from the shallow end of the gene pool had these thoughts and expressed them. AND THESE PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO BREED INDISCRIMINATELY?!!?
