VALPARAISO, Ind. — Police in the northwestern Indiana city of Valparaiso say a gunman is holding an unknown number of hostages inside a real estate office.

Valparaiso Police Sgt. Michael Grennes (gren'-es) says officers have made contact with the gunman but don't know if anyone has been injured. Grennes won't say if the gunman has made any demands.

The Times of Munster reports the incident began Friday morning at a Prudential Executive Group Real Estate office. Police have blocked off nearby streets and officers with guns drawn have surrounded the business about 40 miles southeast of Chicago.

The newspaper reports FBI agents were seen entering the building.

A gunman has released the last two remaining hostages at an office building in Indiana, but he remains inside and armed, police said today.

No hostages remain in the Prudential real estate office that a gunman ambushed today, believing someone in the office owed him money, according to Sgt. Mike Grennes of the Valparaiso police department. One woman suffered a head injury during the hostage situation, but there were no injuries caused by gunshots, he said.

Police and FBI agents remain in a "standoff situation" with the gunman inside the building, he said.

Gunman in Valpo standoff dies; identified as 48-year-old Texan

VALPARAISO — A gunman who held hostages and kept police at bay for nearly seven hours at the Prudential real estate office on Calumet Avenue died Friday after shooting himself in the head, police said.

The gunman was identified as Roy L. Ferguson, 48, of Texas, Porter County Coroner Chuck Harris said Friday night. The city in Texas was not yet known.

Harris said Ferguson suffered three gunshot wounds, two to the head and one to the body, and no determination had been made as to which of the wounds was fatal.

“We’re going to wait until the autopsy is conducted to make those determinations,” Harris said.
