Police Called to New Mexico Governor’s Hotel Room

December 18, 2015By Taegan Goddard

Police were dispatched to New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez’s (R) hotel room at the Eldorado Hotel & Spa about 1:30 a.m. Sunday after a caller complained of loud noises emanating from the room and someone throwing bottles off the balcony, the Santa Fe New Mexican reports.

“Santa Fe County dispatchers on Friday released recordings of Martinez talking to dispatchers after the complaint was made. She insisted on knowing who made the complaint and telling dispatchers that police officers were not needed. The governor said she and her disabled sister were in the room, along with six other people eating pizza. She said they were not making noise. If there was a disturbance in the room, she tells the dispatcher, it would have happened about six hours earlier, but does not provide further explanation in the recording.”

SANTA FE (KRQE) — Governor Susana Martinez says she regrets the way she handled a late-night phone call to Santa Fe police following a noise complaint involving a party for the governor’s staff held at a posh Santa Fe hotel.

Recordings of the phone call obtained by KRQE News 13 reveal a conversation between emergency dispatchers and the governor, as she tries to convince police that there’s no need for them to respond to the complaint early Sunday morning.

On several occasions, Martinez pressures the dispatcher and hotel staff to reveal the identity of who made the complaint. The dispatcher and hotel staff refuse.

At the end of the recorded call, Martinez, referring to the officers who arrived at the hotel, tells dispatchers: “You can call them off.”

New Mexico gov apologizes for staff's conduct at hotel party

Updated 6:40 pm, Friday, December 18, 2015

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez on Friday apologized for the actions of her staff during her annual holiday party at a downtown Santa Fe hotel and also said she should have handled it differently.

"I believe in people accepting responsibility and that is why I'm owning (up to) what happened, and I sincerely apologize," Martinez said in a statement.

Authorities have released dispatch tapes from a noise complaint that led police to a hotel room rented by one of Martinez's staff in which the governor can be heard telling dispatchers there was no need to send officers.

Police were called to the fourth floor of the Eldorado Hotel & Spa around 1:30 a.m. Sunday after the front desk reported a complaint about noise and someone throwing things off the balcony.
