Memorial to war dogs possible in Columbia

Source: heraldonline.com

By Joey Holleman

Johnny Mayo’s determined quest for a national memorial for war dogs in Washington, D.C., has turned closer to home – to Memorial Park in Columbia.

And after years of planning, the goal to build a war dog monument in Columbia is within sight.

The commission that oversees the park has given tentative approval of the design. A spot in the park has been designated. A sculptor has done the clay miniature. All that remains is private fundraising to pay for the monument.

Considering the passion people have for dogs and Mayo’s persistence to get this done, the effort might be able to hit its $200,000 goal. The first phase, which includes the main monument, has a $140,000 price estimate.
