Romney's Memorial Day Promise: To Maintain A US Military 'With No Comparable Power Anywhere'
Source: Associated Press
SAN DIEGO Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney promised Monday to maintain an American military "with no comparable power anywhere in the world."
The likely Republican presidential nominee faced a San Diego crowd estimated at 5,000 in what was billed as a Memorial Day service paying tribute to the nation's war dead, not a campaign rally. But without naming his general election rival, Romney drew clear contrasts with President Barack Obama on the issue of defense.
The Democratic president has proposed reducing the size of the military following the end of the U.S. combat role in Iraq and plans to removes troops from Afghanistan at the end of 2014.
"We have two courses we can follow: One is to follow in the pathway of Europe, to shrink our military smaller and smaller to pay for our social needs," Romney said outside the city's Veterans Memorial Center and Museum. "The other is to commit to preserve America as the strongest military in the world, second to none, with no comparable power anywhere in the world."

(8,020 posts)... either have nothing significant to steal, or like Iraq, we invade them and screw things up so bad we don't even get a deal on the resources.
This country is simply not cut out to be an Empire. Big muscle... no brain.

How does Mitt intend to pay for all of this increased military spending?

(164 posts)Interesting how he phrased that: we can cut military spending and pay for social NEEDS, or have a huge military and... following his own words, presumably not pay for our social NEEDS.

(3,596 posts)We could cut our military spending by 50% and not affect our ability to defend the homeland. We couldn't engage in foreign wars of aggression or "fun" but we could protect the shores of our nation.
But even if we decided to do that....Mittens and his cadre of vultures wouldn't take the reductions on weapons programs that benefit the rich, he would take it out on the backs of the soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines. He would seek to slash their pay, benefits and security. He is all about enriching his cronies....
What a piece of unbridled greed he represents.

(13,704 posts)sorely needed to do just that. Economically this country was more secure than it is at this point.

How?, you ask. It's simple! Just reduce our military spending so it's only twice as much as the next ten countries combined, instead of three times.

(11,521 posts)However I am afraid Romney will never answer that, but we all know the answer is NONE! Chicken hawks like Romney, and his sons, only like the idea of a huge military using all the young people that won't be able to find work if he becomes president. The right wing war mongers plan is to cut programs that help those in need, cut college loans, and keep those of military age unemployed so they can lure them into the military because there will be nothing else for them to do. The "RICH" will not have to worry about that because they can afford higher education, health care, a home, and pretty much anything they want.
The two class system is the "new world order" the right wants so much to see, with the rich at the top, and everyone else either being paid low, low wages with no benefits, or in the military fighting wars so the big corporations can take away resources from what ever country has them by simply finding an excuse to start a war. Rich kids have nothing to worry about.

In a decent society his polling would be about 5%. Now they're saying he's in a horse race with Obama.
Ugh - are we in the Nation of the Stupid or what?
