Romney camp says Obama has failed students on rising debt

CONCORD, N.H. | New Hampshire isnt just first in the nation when it comes to hosting presidential primaries. It also ranks first in student-loan debt, and now the winner of the states Republican presidential primary is seizing on that fact to argue that President Obama has let down students.
Coinciding with Vice President Joseph R. Bidens visit last week to Keene State College, the Republican Party released a Web ad juxtaposing video of New Hampshire college students describing their staggering debt with what it characterized as Mr. Obamas failed promises to deliver relief.
At least one of the students featured in the ad was not happy to learn that his comments were used to further an argument he rejects.
Considering I am not a supporter of Mitt Romney, this is not exactly sitting well with me, said Matt Raso, who just finished his sophomore year at Southern New Hampshire University. The 19-year-old from Warwick, R.I., expects to graduate with roughly $80,000 in debt and said he doesnt hold Mr. Obama or the federal government responsible for any of it.

(21,925 posts)In The Shadow Out Of Time the narrator describes the Yithians and how one of them transferred his mind to their body and their mind to his. Romney is going after Obama as if Obama were actually Romney, like they switched minds and bodies. Apparently, schooling in New Hampshire is more expensive because there has been more privatization, something the real Romney likes. Another reason why they are more expensive is because there is less taxpayer support for publicly-run schools, again something the real Romney likes.
"...The percentage of New Hampshire students who attend private schools is higher than the national average, 40 percent compared to 29 percent nationally. Private schools generally are more expensive than public schools, and New Hampshires private schools also tend to be more expensive than the private schools in other states. ..."
"...New Hampshires public colleges and universities also are more expensive than other state schools, which is illustrated by another ranking that likely contributes heavily to the states high debt level: New Hampshire is last in per capita state support for public higher education. ..."

(48,955 posts)And if they aren't earning enough to pay more - too bad for you! Don't expect any relief from Romneys cut revenues further (because really rich people and corporations shouldn't have to pay much taxes) will mean less support to Colleges and Universities which means higher tuition and higher debt loads.
His solutions works for the wealthy - especially when there tax load decreases. For the majority of the population - it is a big "I got mine! Get your own!"
Sad (and very short sighted) state of affairs.

(23,272 posts)I do believe more could be done by this administration to fix the student loan/debt problem. Reform is way over due. There is no way we should be saddling our best and brightest hope for the future with crippling, catastrophic debt.
File this under "broken clock is right twice/day".
rMoney's position on this doesn't mitigate his other disastrous policy positions but on this issue I can agree with him. More needs to be done.

1) Be born rich
2) If not independently wealthy, ask parents for money
3) Join the army
4) "Shop around" until you get the best price
He flat-out told a kid that he wouldn't do anything as President to alleviate student debt. He isn't interested in solving the problem, he's interested in beating the President over the head with it.

(15,882 posts)Tution, books. Heck, you could switch majors, even get a counselor to extend it a couple years beyond the 4. Kids in the hood could got to CETA, get paid training., learn to work on stuff. Didn't much matter what you wanted to study. People could even got to state offices such as unemployment or others, and with the appropriate story get a couple years tuition gratis, trade schools, whatever.
Oh, and we had inflation, war, Republicans, yada, yada, yada, all the excuses. We listened to them less back then, but then all those smart people started listening to Reagan as he sold off their wealth, their work, said "Looky here how good we are doin' now!". Fooled 'em then, still foolin' 'em now.
The nation got big return on those investments. Later the banks started perpetuating fraud and stole so much of the wealth people thought they had created. And we let them do that too.
The people in these divided states of A-merry-ca are settling for way too little.

(13,133 posts)Excuse me, i thinking they still were teaching math in school. After spending most of my teenage years burning the candle at both ends by working and going to the state required school deal I can say that mostly the school hours were not worth it and didn't pay off for me. Nothing wrong with education or school but now-a-days being over-educated and not having common sense seem like they go together more and more. Why do you sign up for these loans? It seems like it's kind of a crazy thing. If your goal is to be of use or to make money why do indenture yourself to some loan company? Mostly it seems to me it's backwards thinking
Our society has failed, it let people go through a school system without teaching common sense. To even debate or listen to the M.T. McBain blame others for this travesty is just ignorance or more of the comedy of errors

(9,350 posts)This is just another example of Republican craziness. How can Mitt Romney criticize President Obama over student loan debt when the Republican Party has supported the ideas that have increased the problem? Republicans have,if not always, have for years opposed giving college students grants that they do not have to repay. In addition, Romney has stated that he supports the Paul Ryan budget plan. The Ryan plan will make the student loan debt problem worse in that the Ryan budget makes large cuts to the Pell Grant program. Those cuts will make more students have to take out more loans. Furthermore, Romney has stated that he intends to cut, or eliminate a number of programs that provide money to low income families that allow members of those families to either attend college or attend college for less money.
This is another example of why we need a better main stream media. This is not the first time Romney has criticized President Obama for something that Romney will make worse. Months ago Romney claimed that President Obama was waging a war on women due to female job lose during the Obama Administration. Very few in the main stream media mentioned that Romney supported the Paul Ryan budget, which would make female job lose worse. Romney should also be called out for his support of policies that make college more expensive for low income individuals.
