Dad of Washington school shooter faces sentencing over guns

Source: AP

SEATTLE (AP) — The father of a teenager who used his dad's gun to kill four classmates and then himself at a Washington state high school was scheduled to be sentenced Monday on firearms charges.

Raymond Fryberg was convicted in September of illegally owning six firearms, including the gun that his 15-year-old son, Jaylen, used in the 2014 school shooting.

A domestic violence protection order filed by Raymond Fryberg's former partner in tribal court should have kept him from owning a gun. But a record of the 2002 order never made it into any state or federal criminal databases used by firearms dealers conducting background checks during gun purchases because of a flawed reporting system between tribes and outside authorities.

Prosecutors say Fryberg lied on a form he filled out when he bought the guns to hide the restraining order. His lawyers said he didn't know he was prohibited from having firearms.

His conviction was definitely warranted.

Until we begin treating everyone who doesn't safely secure their weapons as the criminals they are, we'll never see an end to the numerous avoidable tragedies caused by their irresponsible behavior.

boy, especially someone w a protection order. that is my #1 wish for gun control. nobody w an order gets a gun. and anybody who deserves an order gets one.
in cook county the sheriff has been rounding up guns from domestic abusers. somebody who abuses their own family should be first in line at the "gun grab".

That's not to say I'm saying he shouldn't get convicted, it's just that the law is so unevenly applied.

gotten him disarmed by the police by court order. How difficult is that? That would in itself save a lot of lives of children, women and suicides.

I also think the parents/owners of weapons picked up by children and used in a shooting need jailing.

to bring this system up to par with what is needed!

I'm glad he got this, but anyone who owns guns, and their children use them to commit murder, should be tried for allowing their kids to have access to a gun. I think we need better laws in that regard...making gun owners liable for the use of their weapons. And if legitimately stolen (not by your own kids) it needs to be reported within a very short time frame, or you are liable for any crime committed with that weapon.

It is not a toy. Gun owners need to be more accountable for their weapons, and how accessible they are to others.
