At packed Baxter Arena, Obama calls for Americans to get past 'doom, gloom' and solve tough problems

Source: Omaha World Herald

By David Hendee

In his first full-fledged visit as president to Nebraska, President Barack Obama called on America to reject the politics of doom and gloom and work together to build a stronger and better nation and world.

"That’s not the spirit that brought America so far,’’ the president said Wednesday afternoon at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Baxter Arena.

The president’s Omaha visit launched a two-day tour of the United States — after delivering his final State of the Union address — to highlight the progress his administration has made and address the challenges and opportunities ahead. It was his first public appearance after Tuesday’s speech to Congress.

To an enthusiastic crowd that authorities estimated at 11,000 jammed into the arena, Obama repeated themes he raised in the State of the Union address. He pitched his argument that the nation has improved economically under his policies. He pushed for innovation in education and health care, including a national effort to cure cancer.

I decided not to go. I did watch his motorcade from about 50 feet away.

In fact, he will reap the rewards at the Corporate Podium, where he can be seen every week in his future once he leaves office.

At $ 375,000 per speech, or more, he won't have to think abut the fact of how people will pay more for medicine, the earth will continue to plundered, and our tax monies will be going to soothe the injured pocket books of Big Industry, should any local entities like our individual states decide not to ruin their environment in order to comply with the TPP.

Many out here are simply not able to make it anymore. Family members are dying without health care, families destroyed by non violent incarceration, threat of losing housing and ability to support your family, let alone any money for any type of recreation. Many have hopeless joyless lives.

Get over it? Get over the doom and gloom? Easier for some to say than for the majority to do.

Cut the food stamps again. Don't worry about it.

just to qualify for SSI-- they've got to practically be hanging from a financial cliff-- no life insurance, financial help from family, or savings over a paltry amount are allowed, for example, just to qualify for a couple hundred bucks in SSI.
