CHARLESTON, South Carolina Bernie Sanders dominated Sunday nights Democratic debate here, overpowering Hillary Clinton in a format she typically controls. With polls showing Clinton on the ropes in Iowa and New Hampshire, Sanders strong performance may have further imperiled Clintons once-inevitable path to her partys presidential nomination.
Touting his surging poll numbers in the two key early states, Sanders was prepared and in command throughout the two-hour debate sponsored by NBC News and YouTube. In previous appearances, Clinton has easily dominated the stage. But turning in his strongest debate performance yet, Sanders drove the conversation brushing aside her attacks as he doggedly returned to his core message of political
In the long arc of a primary campaign that began with warm relations between the two top candidates only to turn acrimonious over side issues, Sunday night was the first time voters saw the core divide between Clinton and Sanders.
They clashed over their approach to governing revolution or evolution in a way broadly hinted at since the day each got into the race but was somewhat obscured until now.

(7,723 posts)He was a little weak in the beginning on gun control, but really got going on wall street and healthcare. You can just feel his passion. He made so many great points on the problems with our system, and how we can fix it. Hillary just seemed to hint at tinkering with the status quo.

Bernie is passionate about our future and it shows. For that I will be Voting for him, no matter what.

The problem is, she is ambitious. So was Julius Caesar. How does she balance that caring with her ambitions and how far her owners will allow her to go before turning off the spigot. Her owners come first.
This last is the problem with 99% of Congress and the president.

(24,324 posts)gain more and more power or influence, for some/ many/most, the meaning of life recedes farther and farther. They become more and more detached from it. They live in a make believe world. It's a sickness.
And then there is the example of Jimmy Carter.
The Clintons are no Jimmy Carter, bless him.

(39,215 posts)better listen to what Bernie says. My union son-in-law and my daughter do not see that Hillary is threatening their futures.
We live in MN and things are still pretty good here thanks to our Democratic legislature. And when I talk to them about Bernie they are more worried that he cannot win than what she will do to them when she continues to lean right.

(29,035 posts)but it is disingenuous because nearly every bill includes something you don't want in it. It's called compromise! We get it out here because we know Bernie votes for the people. The powerful lobbies for corporate interests don't influence him.
When we talk about votes, let's never forget the Iraq war vote.

Clintons debating performance is formidable because it combines her intelligence with a sincerity and level of conviction that often seem absent in other forums. When she opened the debate speaking of Martin Luther King Jr.s role fighting for increased wages, she used his career as a subtle metaphor for what she is pitching: principled leadership with a strong practical bent. That mixture, along with her strength in close-quarter combat and an ability to wrap herself in President Obamas recordsomething that played well to the Charleston crowd in the auditoriumwas what won her this debate.

Chuck Todd: "I think this debate is going to be remembered as the 'Bernie Sanders Debate'".
I agree.
A read a few reviews after the debate (before I actually watched it). I thought Bernie must have done poorly and Hillary triumphed. I read a thread here from the pro-Hillary group. (Okay, I was skeptical of the thread). But, I was anxious to watch the debate and decide for myself.
Bernie was tough. He was in command. He wouldn't be bullied. He let the audience know where he and Hillary stood on the issues. Hillary had her hands full.

(39,215 posts)were mostly talking about was how biased the questioners were. If that was true and most are still saying Bernie won then he did one heck of a job.

(598 posts)Bernie, Hillary and O'Malley seemed very prepared. They all seemed ready. Hillary looked very nervous to me only at the very beginning. After one question, she seemed to relax.
Martin O'Malley gave some very good answers. He talked about his accomplishments as governor. I was impressed. When he talked about the privacy issue, I agreed with him 100%. He also added humor with some of his remarks. Three very different candidates.
The thread I read from here kept on about how wonderful Hillary did at the debate. Everyone on the pro-Hillary thread agreed. They were all in sync. At the time I read it, it was unanimous - Hillary won, they said. So I had to watch the Debate to see for myself. After watching the Debate, I must disagree with them. However, if I disagreed with them, I'd probably be "blocked" from the thread.

(1,917 posts)Hillary's voice is starting to become very annoying, to me.
I can't listen to the content of her speeches, My ears turn off when people shout.
It seems to be all she has: Speak loudly and forcibly.
Sorry, it turns the channel.
