Poll: Stabenow grows lead against potential Republican Senate opponents

Detroit News Washington Bureau

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow has maintained her lead over Republican challenger Pete Hoekstra, according to a poll out Wednesday.

Stabenow, D-Lansing, leads the former U.S. representative from Holland 53 percent to 37 percent. That's up two percentage points from the last time Public Policy Polling polled the race in February.

Incumbent Stabenow — a two-term senator — has grown her lead over another GOP challenger, Clark Durant. She leads the Cornerstones Schools co-founder 53 percent to 31 percent. That margin is up five percentage points from February.

"This looked like a potentially competitive race earlier in the cycle, but Debbie Stabenow is in a pretty solid position now," said Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling. "Things are really going to have to go south for Democrats for this one to end up in the toss-up column."
