(CA) Lawmakers pass bills on pipeline safety

State lawmakers on Wednesday approved two measures aimed at protecting Californians and their neighborhoods in the aftermath of Pacific Gas & Electric Co.'s deadly 2010 pipeline explosion in San Bruno.

The state Assembly unanimously approved a measure that would require California regulators to adopt safety standards for gas pipelines and would allow the state to fine utilities that fail to meet those benchmarks. AB1456 by Assemblyman Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo, implements recommendations made by an independent review panel appointed by the California Public Utilities Commission.
