First on CNN: Former NAACP head to endorse Bernie Sanders
Source: CNN
Ben Jealous, the former head of the NAACP, will endorse Bernie Sanders, a source familiar with the campaign told CNN.
The endorsement is a potential boost to Sanders who has struggled to gain traction among African-American voters, though he has made small gains on Democratic presidential rival Hillary Clinton, according to recent polls.
Jealous, 43, is set to appear with Sanders in New Hampshire ahead of the February 9 primary to announce his support.
Elected to the NAACP post in 2008, Jealous was the youngest person to head the civil rights organization. Credited with re-invigorating the organization and making it more politically relevant, Jealous served for four years.

(12,882 posts)Great development! I wish more of the black community would wake up to the reality (UNreality, in truth) of HRC's phony concerns for them. Geez - isn't she a conspirator with the private prisons - the ones stuffed with undeserving black inmates???
We're more than awake and do not need anyone to point us towards reality, but thank you for your concern. Ben Jealous is his own man, and his endorsement of Bernie does not sway me in the slightest. I never really understood the whole endorsement thing anyway. I can make up my own mind without anyone telling me what to think.

(12,882 posts)Sadly, you're in the minority in that respect. So I welcome Mr Jealous' backing.

(79 posts)How do you know that he is in the minority? I say that I don't need anyone to tell me who to support or vote for and no matter how many Bernie supports rail against my support for Hillary, I will never ever vote for Bernie Sanders, thanks to people like you. Ben Jealous is a fool, looking for a payoff.

(1,384 posts)But it seems that people really don't realize how a condescending tone does not help their case. Treating blacks as though they're children needing a good lecturing is not the way to win minority support for Bernie. I'm a grown man and I can use the internet just like anyone else. I know both Bernie's and Hillary's positions quite well, I just like Hillary better. I've made up my mind and my support for Hillary is not in jeopardy. What is in jeopardy is my support for Bernie if Hillary should lose. Bernie's supporters are really turning me off to this whole process right now.

(4,259 posts)More and more people are beginning to realize that Sanders has been on their side for a long time. Unlike Clinton, he doesn't sing his own praises.

(1,145 posts)Hillary's support thus far from the Black community is largely based on name recognition, not her policies. I think most Black people can see that she's fake and phony as hell, and as Bernie becomes more visible, we'll see her support start to dry up.
I've always thought Ben Jealous was a bright man and a good leader for an NAACP that had been struggling to regain some of the relevance it had during the civil rights era. Many in the NAACP (and the leadership in particular) have long-since sold out to corporate interests and I wouldn't be surprised if they end up endorsing Hillary since she's the choice of the corporate-minded.

(8,760 posts)a huge percentage of that is name recognition.
It must be hell to be in Hillary's camp.....you start out ahead....then you drop, and drop and drop.

(79 posts)In South Carolina, only Jim Clyburn's endorsement means anything to me. Ben Jealous does not even live in South Carolina. Since we are talking about AA support, Jim Clyburn's opinion is important, not some white guy.

(185 posts)Just saying.
I was referring to Harpootlian, the SC who endorsed Bernie. It was in another forum. Sorry. I know that Ben is black. He has his own agenda.

(311 posts)You specifically referred to Ben Jealous.
Better move would have been to delete the comment.
