Vancouver skyline featured in Marco Rubio's 'Morning again in America' campaign ad

Source: Vancouver Sun

Marco Rubio, currently running third in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, must be hoping that scenic Vancouver can give him a push past frontrunners Donald Trump and Ted Cruz.

The Florida senator’s latest campaign ad, titled Morning Again in America, opens with three seconds of beautiful stock footage featuring our skyline and harbour.

“It’s morning again in America,” says the narrator as a tugboat zips through the water in front of familiar Vancouver landmarks like the Harbour Centre, One Wall Centre and Port Metro Vancouver cranes.

There's only one problem. The cityscape at the beginning is Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

I've been there often. I recognize the funny looking observation tower in the middle.

...in The X Men and The Fantastic Four. Not to mention thousands of other movies and TV shows. Hence the easy access to stock film footage of Vancouver.

This will go down as the second biggest blunder in Republican TV propaganda. The biggest, of course, is Ted Cruz using a soft-core porn actress in his ads, and the second biggest being the 2008 GOP Convention when they showed an image of Walter Reid Middle School behind John McCain, when they meant to show Walter Reid Hospital.

Not only is it a shot of Vancouver, B.C.; but this commercial is also confused on many OTHER levels. Reagan's "It's Morning In America" commercial was for Reagan's RE-ELECTION campaign in 1984, and it was designed to convince people to STAY THE COURSE! So, isn't this going to send a subliminal message to people to STAY THE COURSE, and elect another Democrat in 2016?

It's time to dispense with this fiction that Marco Rubio knows what he's doing. He has NO CLUE what he's doing, that's why he's done the things he's done!

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson is urging a developer to drop Donald Trump’s name from a downtown tower project, saying the U.S. presidential hopeful’s “hateful positions” have no place in the city.

Robertson has sent a passionate letter to the Holborn Group, which is building the 63-storey Trump International Hotel and Tower on West Georgia Street.

“As mayor, I’m proud that Vancouver is known throughout the world for our steadfast commitment to diversity, equality and freedom from discrimination and hatred,” he wrote.

“In contrast, Donald Trump’s hateful positions and commentary remind us all of much darker times in our world’s past — and it is incumbent on all of us to forcefully challenge hatred in all of the ways it confronts us.”

Trump has made a number of anti-immigrant statements since announcing his intention to seek the Republican nomination. But his recent call to ban all Muslims from entering the United States has sparked widespread condemnation.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, while not mentioning Trump by name, condemned his politics of fear, intolerance and hateful rhetoric on Wednesday.

In his letter, Robertson referenced a petition signed by more than 50,000 people asking that the businessman’s name be removed from the Vancouver tower.

City councillor Kerry Jang has also called on the developer to ditch the Trump brand.

“It is their belief, and my belief, that Trump’s name and brand have no more place on Vancouver’s skyline than his ignorant ideas have in the modern world,” Robertson said.

Robertson told reporters that he has asked acting city manager Sadhu Johnston to see if council has any power to change the name if the developer doesn’t take action, though he noted the city lacked any “obvious tools.”

The Holborn Group did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump visited the city in 2013 to help announce the $360-million project.

The Trump Organization said at the time that it was lending its brand power and operating the tower, but that the family would not be investing in the development.

The tower was set to be completed next fall. It would become the second Trump International Hotel and Tower in Canada after the one in Toronto.

There have also been calls to rename the Toronto building, including from Coun. Josh Matlow, who tweeted that the city is “diverse and respectful”, but Trump is a “fascist.”

British Columbia Premier Christy Clark said she agreed with Robertson that Trump’s name doesn’t represent Vancouver.

Still, given it's a Presidential campaign, you'd think someone would verify everything that goes into the ad campaign, especially given the historical impact laughter and ridicule have played for other candidate's feckless efforts.

His staff was supposed to put up a picture of Walter Reed Hospital but instead put up a picture of Walter Reed Middle School.

A picture with a big lawn so everyone spoke before a green screen FOR THE SECOND TIME.
