University of Minnesota Scientist Drops Bombshell About Walker: Says He Fathered Child at Marquette

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by NancyBlueINOklahoma (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: uppitywis.org, by Jud Lounsbury on 06/02/2012

Yesterday, the University of Minnesota's Dr. Bernadette Gillick was best known as a nationally recognized scientist for her research into how the brain recovers from injuries.

After today, she will likely be forever known for coming forward and telling the world that Scott Walker fathered a child and refused to take responsibility for it while at Marquette:

Bernadette Gillick was a college freshman in 1988 when she first met Scott Walker. It was spring semester, and she had just transferred to Marquette University. She was assigned a room in O’Donnell Hall (then a women’s dormitory), which she shared with her new roommate, Ruth (not her real name). Ruth was dating Scott Walker, who was 20 at the time ...

The Walker love child story
Submitted by Steve Hanson on Sun, 06/03/2012 - 9:44am

This is one of those mornings of mixed feelings in my office. Jim Hightower has often said that mixed feelings is what you have when your daughter comes home from the prom with a Gideon bible in her purse, and somehow that's appropriate here.

We don't have any direct confirrmation of this story, and it may well turn out not to be true. It is only an allegation, but it is an allegation by someone who one would really expect to be credible. We were very much tempted to sit on this story, since it is obviously open to questioning, particularly considering the timing. We understand all of that, and we also understand that in the grand scheme of things, there are much more important reasons to consider Scott Walker unfit for office (about which you will hear more in the next two days). Although this is nor originally our story, and comes from the Wisconsin Citizens Media Coop, I'm not going to try to chicken out by saying it's their responsibilty. We've published it here, and take responsibility for the fact that we've done so.

Clearly many will not believe this story about Walker's possible behavior as a college student, and of course you are all welcome to your doubt. I personally have doubts about this story, and expect no less from our readers. But this story is currently flooding the Internet, and whether you choose to believe it or not it is going to be the subject of debate around water coolers everywhere tomorrow. ..............

"After consulting with her family, Ruth decided against an abortion. Bernadette was with Ruth in the hospital for the birth of her child later that year (and says Walker was not present), and later stood up as a bridesmaid in Ruth’s 1992 marriage to another man. She says Walker eventually had to concede that he was the father, after the birth and paternity test."

I wanna see the paternity papers. Block out the mom and kid's name, but it would be so sweet to see Scot 'I Am Not A Crook' Walker's name on the paper.

We need to be careful with stories like this that haven't been verified. Yes, someone could be impersonating Daniel Bice, but the comment rings true to me. Yes, the woman who had the baby could be covering up for some undisclosed reason, but we have zero evidence of that. Note, the official CCAP family court records that Daniel Bice and others accessed do not indicate that governor Scott Walker was the father.

Woman Denies Walker Fathered Baby - JSO Reporter Daniel Bice

Let me explain how it works. A rumor with no basis or that has long-ago been disproven miraculously resurfaces, goes viral, but then gets definitively debunked, putting the good guys on the defensive amidst accusations of smear tactics, and, more importantly, poisoning the water for many other legitimate allegations.

http://my.firedoglake.com/phoenix/2012/06/02/did-self-styled-mr-morality-scott-walker-father-a-love-child-in-1988/

A variation of this rumor was posted at Gawker late last month (like four days ago), though per then-Gawker writer Maureen O’Connor (who mentioned the rumor as one of the tips she received but never wrote up at the time) it was sent to her in February of 2011:

From: Countess Elizabeth Báthory of Hungary
To: Maureen O’Connor ... Feb 22, 2011 ...
I have, at this point, what is just a rumor, but it’s one from a reliable source and would be a GREAT scoop if it could be verified. Our high school educated Governor Scott Walker is reported to have been tossed out of Marquette University for impregnating a married, 30 year old woman. He is SUCH a family values guy.

..... there is a major discrepancy between the two stories — namely, the age of the lady Walker allegedly knocked up and then abandoned. One has her as a thirty-year-old; the other, as an eighteen-year-old student and Walker’s girlfriend ....

UPDATE: Conspiracy theorists might well wonder if these rumors are being released to distract from this bit of news:

With the recall election less than two days away, federal prosecutors are closing in on Governor Scott Walker ...

..........
