geoge Kennedy, the veteran actor who built his early career playing heavies and won an Academy Award in 1968 for his supporting role as the tough Southern prison-camp convict who grew to hero-worship Paul Newmans defiant title character in Cool Hand Luke, died Sunday in Boise, Idaho, of natural causes, said his grandson Cory Schenkel. He was 91.
In a more than 50-year screen career, the deep-voiced Kennedy appeared in dozens of movies, including The Flight of the Phoenix, The Sons of Katie Elder, The Dirty Dozen, Earthquake, Cahill United States Marshal, The Eiger Sanction, Death on the Nile, and the Airport series of films.

(1,348 posts)My mum used to work at K-Mart in Dubuque, IA back in the day. George Kennedy was filming a movie in Galena, IL with Clint Eastwood. Mr Kennedy came into K-Mart and walked around for a while, getting a few things. Mum couldn't believe he was there, so kept looking at him. She said he seemed surprised, a little bummed even, that nobody recognized him. As he was finishing checking out and getting ready to leave, he noticed that she'd recognized him and was looking at him. He gave her a big smile in recognition, totally making her day.
