(21,653 posts)And you might get a letter after January 14th?
How could you drive any car and not notice that it had a missing brake pad??

(6,257 posts)in a pre delivery inspection?
Mopar151
(10,348 posts)Most of pre-delivery has to do with removing packing (seat covers, etc.) and washing, along with checking and recording serial #, key #, maybe checking the tire pressure.
And the tech MAYBE has 1/2 an hour to do this - if the dealer even bothers. (I'm a former Mr. Goodwrench)
cloudbase
(6,257 posts)has to drive the thing, whether to the wash bay or to fill the tank or for whatever. It should be pretty obvious at that time that something is wrong.

(24,382 posts)No, really...
Stopping. That's kind of an important basic necessity in a vehicle.
How did these get out of the factory without the brake pads? Did Homer Simpson get fired from the nuke plant and did he get a job there?
A car has FOUR wheels, with TWO brake pads on each wheel, meaning we have EIGHT brake pads on a car, and yes, maybe ONE of those eight brake pads is missing.
The other wheels make sure the car stops when someone is moving it around. Yes, it may stop in 350 feet instead of 320 feet when traveling 40 MPH.
This is the first month's production, out of a newly restored plant (Lake Orion) which, for the first time, has THREE WAGE TIER Workers inside.
http://labornotes.org/2011/07/will-auto%E2%80%99s-three-tier-wages-be-table
About half the Lake Orion workforce are GM employees who make $28.12 Union wages.
And then there are a subset of workers, about a third, who make $14.60 dollars an hour, as UNION GM workers.
And then there are a couple hundred "third tier" workers, who are CONTRACT employees, not GM employees, and make about $10 an hour, with no benefits at all.
Who do you suppose is responsible for putting on those brake pads?
Just sayin'.
Sonic is going to be a good car. Sales have been good so far, and it's a brand new fuel efficient design.

(10,348 posts)Calipers would be "pre-loaded" with pads, hoses, etc. - but an experienced line worker would probably catch it.

(40,640 posts)Same thing happens at $10,000 an hour.
There's a sweet spot in the distribution of wealth where most everyone is doing good work they can be proud of, from line worker to CEO.
The U.S.A. has long been out of that sweet spot. Inadequately paid workers are actually deprived of the means to do excellent work. For example, the workers in a fast food place simply can't build a better hamburger with the tools and materials provided. And if they did they'd probably get fired for slowing down the process. Same thing happens with cars, same thing happens with schools.
