Conservative group sets up nativity scene in Capitol; move angers anti-religion group

A tiny figure of baby Jesus is surrounded by Mary, Joseph and the three wise men in a new nativity scene in the state Capitol rotunda.

The conservative group Wisconsin Family Action set up the manger scene on Sunday, and its president Julaine Appling said they plan to display it through the end of the month.

But the move angered the Madison-based Freedom from Religion Foundation, which is now planning its own “slightly blasphemous” Capitol nativity display celebrating the winter solstice.

“It’s distressing to me that we have a manger scene on top of all of the religion at the Capitol,” Freedom from Religion co-president Annie Laurie Gaylord said. “Every day it’s religion, religion, religion.”

8. This has NOTHING to do with Religion, but the recall effort
Mon Dec 12, 2011, 06:02 PM
Dec 2011

The Governor, who is subject to a recall, is looking to paint the people who want him removed as left wing nut cases, while he is a politician who is listening to the people.

He did this by permitting the Nativity scene, then watch the people who oppose such things on Government property fall all over themselves to protest it. They may even file a lawsuit to force the State to remove the Nativity scene. The Governor wins whether the people who want the Nativity scene removed wins or lose. If the "Freedom from Religion" group wins, he complies with the Court order, but can then say he was just trying to accommodate everyone. If the "Freedom from Religion" loses the lawsuit, he then would have shown he can stand up for the little people who wanted this Nativity Scene up.

Furthermore the Governor knows he is unpopular with the economic left do to his actions to cut Unions and pay. He knows many people who are Economic Left (Union members and supporters) are also Social Conservatives, i.e. support religion and oppose gay marriage. Thus his support for the Nativity Scene divides the biggest group of people who oppose him, the Economic Left. Divide and Conquer has long been the policy of the GOP and this battle over this Nativity Scene is one way to divide and Conquer.

If I was advising anyone, I would tell the "Freedom from Religion" group NOT to file a lawsuit, they have done enough damage all ready by falling into the trap laid by the Governor when this Nativity Scene went up. We have to pick our battles, and right now the most important battle is the Economic Battle which includes the recall of this Governor, and this battle over these statures is his attempt to stop that recall. Do NOT fall into his trap, just ignore these statutes.

Why are they angry? Why are the anti-religious?

I am not a religious person, but I don't spend a whole lot of time worrying about nativity scenes and other Xmas traditions.

Tis the season to be jolly--don't worry, it will all be over in a couple of weeks.

Actually, my post was meant to tweak the responder--I do believe that religions and governments should be separated from one another. However, I also believe that the anti-religious zealots have gone off the deep end with their objections to Xmas displays.

I figure we must not be doing too bad, if people have time to waste on this sort of non-sense.

But when a religious themed item is put into a government building, it no longer becomes a religious matter, it becomes a political matter.

I would say leave it up if the Jews, Muslims, Wiccans, Hindi, African Americans who celebrate Kwanzaa, Buddhists, Taoists, atheists, Native Americans, Satanists, Druids, and any and every other religious group in the country was allowed to set up a themed holiday message as well. Let's see how well that kind of a proposition goes over. Take my word for it: it won't.

A few years ago, there was another nativity scene planned for another government building, and several of the other religious groups made the same request. The RR quickly moved in and took their manger scene down, rather than share the space with other religious systems. It's that kind of demonstration that will keep the RR in its place, but few others are willing to go that step. Too bad.

You might recall a judge named Roy Moore who put up the 10 commandments in the court house in Alabama, and was told by a federal judge to take it down. HE wouldn't do it. He was adored by the RR as a result.

These kind of people keep pushing their views onto others and very few have stood up to them throughout the past.

It's time the rest of us told the Roy Moores of this world to shove their beliefs up their asses.

Jesus behind a table pouring soup into the bowl of an unemployed person.
Or Jesus standing next to a hospital bed with a sick patient that doesn't have insurance.

Not sure they would know what to do with those.

And it'll help Walker unite his fundie base and stay in office for an even bigger religious right stunt next year. Keep on track to recall or keep Walker. The lines are much too close.

He must go and WI can't lose the hard won momentum they've worked for this year. If people spend energy on this, it will get national attention and Walker's crimes will be forgotten.

Don't lose focus, this is a trick.

started off with small moves until they run a great deal of our government today. It's time others got their own views in--if the RR wants a goddamned fight, I think it's time for every other religious (and areligious) group fought for their own rights.

I am SICK and tired of the shit the RR has forced on this country. They are as great a pestilence as the bubonic plague.

I'll be happy to see the day they are put into their proper place--irrelevance.
