California man sentenced for possessing biological toxin

Updated 7:36 pm, Thursday, March 10, 2016

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A 31-year-old Northern California man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for possessing a biological toxin and dealing in numerous firearms.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Sacramento says undercover agents paid James Christopher Malcolm thousands of dollars for four assault-style rifles, ammunition, explosives, a silencer, three improvised detonation devices and equipment to convert handguns and semi-automatic pistols to fully automatic weapons.

The agents were posing as arms dealers for drug trafficking organizations. The 2-month undercover operation ended with Malcolm's arrest in 2014.

Malcolm, who lived in the Sacramento suburb of Carmichael, also was sentenced for possessing abrin, a natural poison that can kill within days.

Prosecutors: Carmichael Man Sold Weapons to Undercover Agents

Posted 4:01 PM, June 5, 2014, by Ian McDonald

SACRAMENTO-

A Carmichael man was indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday for allegedly dealing weapons, and selling some to undercover agents.

James Malcolm, 29, is formally charged with transfer of explosive materials for use in a crime, unlawful dealing in firearms and possession of machine guns.

Prosecutors say Malcolm met with the informant to talk about selling fully-automatic rifles. Malcolm also allegedly told the informant that selling firearms was a side business, and his main business was dealing in explosives and poison.

Later, investigators say Malcolm sold four “AR-15-style” machine guns, 1.5 pounds of improvised explosive material, three blasting caps and a gun silencer to agents posing as weapons dealers for drug traffickers.
